Your section on COBOL gave me flashbacks to 2 years wasted at college learning it. Never had a need for it since 1994 :)
Main site: www.mug-uk.co.uk - digging up bits from my past: Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (ripping guides). I host a C64 Radio Show for a mate, Max Hall via www.chipsidshow.co.uk

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in for Word 2007 upwards. A toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: mikestoolbox.co.uk

Actually, COBOL programmers are one of the most valuable software engineers I know of. Same for Fortran. Lot of banks, insurance companies etc still run software decades old. :)

Actually, my interest in COBOL came from a friend of mine that, as you said, used it daily at work for a financial company.
And she still programs with COBOL in 2023.

One of my first technical author roles was for a payroll system that was programmed in COBOL but with a Delphi front-end. That was 20 years between passing my course at uni and my next sight of the language. Made it a bit easier to understand what the programmers were writing about :)

Yup... same here for Fortran... was taught at Uni but never used it.
In contrast, I learned C on my own reading the R&D book and used it at work. 8)

Thank you Guillaume, the old link never worked for me. Some useful resources in there. The Forth looks very accomplished with an excellent manual.

Oh? What browser did you use to access my old page?

Thanks! I started programming my FORTH in 1989... That's why it looks complete!
It's a pleasure to write a manual, and most of all, it's essential for me as I rapidly forget what features I added...!

Hi Guilliaume.

I saw the initial post message, so had a quick look on the site to see if you had made any other new software...

Im not sure if I overlooked it, or your old site didnt have it there, but 'ProgDsk' is absolutely amazing! :o

Yet again you have made another great piece of software. Its a real game changer for me, as Ive never really had the time to properly investigate the AES and develop GEM programs with it.

I havent spent much time with the more advanced features like variable use, etc and have only knocked up a quick shell of an app, but this program unlocks the GEM interface for me (at least a simpler form of it). I can now easily add a front end onto my assembly programs, thanks to you. I would say its even quicker than designing something in a resource construction program!

Thank you so much for your continual support of the Atari platform. :D

'ProgDesk' already was on the old site, as I remember having read the page about it.

Ah. I must have overlooked it, or its significance, at least.

Im not sure how complex a GEM program can be produced (yet), but still, this really could do with more exposure, as it is leagues easier to comprehend than the steeper learning curve of full GEM AES(+VDI) programming. I cannot stress that enough.

No more using the VT-52 terminal emulation for screen display/output for me!

Did i already mention that one of my first tasks as professional was programming in COBOL? :) (it was a system to collect records from a Siemens HICOM and generate invoices from it).

COBOL is really powerful to manage DATA, that was a great pleasure to discover its features !

Wow.... as usual Mikro was spot on again..... ThorstenOtto you are one of the most valuable programmers for our community.
Actually both of you are.

Too bad I missed out on Cobol but I did some ABAP programming (late 80s early 90s I think)...

The industry missed to educate a whole generation to deal with mainframe technology and most people in the field are retiring now.

- Mainframes are used by 71% of Fortune 500 companies.
- Mainframes handle 90% of all credit card transactions.
- Mainframes handle 68% of the world’s production IT workloads, but they account for only 6 percent of IT costs.

I still work with COBOL daily for a major European banking system and it pays very well. 8)

I learned Occam while doing my degree in the 1980's, playing with petrinets etc. I may have some notes from that course.

Somebody has been listening to the IBM propaganda 😅I'm joking, the mainframe is still pivotal in finance industry. I am a sysprog, all my work is with banks and government.
In the mid 2000's I came into the industry because everyone was retiring, the skills are very hard to hire these days
