Rainbow tos using Gotek
Rainbow tos using Gotek
Hi All,
Trying to relive the 80's so I picked up a 1040STFM running TOS 1.02.
Replaced the dodgy floppy with a gotek drive.
Game images etc work ok but I would like to run Rainbow TOS (1.04) and play around with the desktop again.
I'm sure that was the last version I had running back in the day.
Struggling to find a working version of 1.04. From memory I thought it was just a case of throwing the TOS.IMG file onto a floppy but doesn't work. Tried putting it in an AUTO folder too. I'm using the HxC Floppy Emulator on PC to create .st/.hfe images.
Am I missing something?
Is there an image for physical roms and another for running from floppy/gotek?
Thanks for any assistance
Phil

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
Versions of TOS.IMG that can be loaded from floppy are much different from ROMs. I think only very early tos versions, and kaos tos can be loaded this way.
ROM images can be found in a lot of places, one of them being http://avtandil.narod.ru/tose.html

Thanks for the link.
I just tried EmuTos and that loads OK so in theory what I'm doing is right.
My memory could be playing tricks but I'm sure I ran tos 1.04 from a floppy on my 520stfm all those years ago.
I will continue to look for a floppy based version of tos 1.04.

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
You can use software such as RAMTOS/SELTOS (https://atari.8bitchip.info/astopensw.php) to load a supported TOS ROM image into RAM. Note that this of course eats away valuable RAM and is thus inferior to actually replacing the ROMs.
Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
Hmm, unless I'm missing something seems that site has the ROM images but only the French ( pre release ) floppy version for 1.04
I tried their UK version but it won't load from floppy image so it does look like there are / were 2 versions.
If anyone else has any links it would be appreciated

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
Yes you do. Why don't you use the link provided by czietz to make a ROM image bootable from disk?

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
It is possible that I created my TOS 1.04 DE disk with SELTOS aswell...I am not 100% sure.
I think I also did a 2.06 version to upgrade my 1040STFM.

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
I found an ancient ppera tool, CREDISK. It seems it was used for my TOS 1.04 DE copy.
I now made US and UK bootable disks with this.
Sequence:
For machines with TOS 1.02 fitted it should be fine.

Thanks for all the comments.
I did not realise you could make a floppy bootable image from a ROM image, will give it a go.

As a siedenote, czietz already figured out why those fail on EmuTOS and made a patch! Cheers!

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
TOS 1.04 on disk was officially released by Atari at the time, at least the US version. It was also distributed as part of one version of the Developer Kit. I'm not sure why it is not available from the usual sites that carry TOS images.

Re: Rainbow tos using Gotek
I can confirm there was an official German version, sold by ST Computer magazine for 20DM IIRC. But I could never find that version anywhere.

TOS 1.04 on disk sold by ST-Computer? Did they own the copyright?simonsunnyboy wrote: Sun Dec 05, 2021 3:27 pm I can confirm there was an official German version, sold by ST Computer magazine for 20DM IIRC.
I once had a so-called developer version of 1.04 on disk which was loaded via bootloader code. I don't know if I saved the disk content as MSA. Probably formatted the disk when I got 1.04 in EPROMs.

I can'tt ell if they owned it but I clearly remember it being advertised in the "Sonderdisks" section.
