New YM tracker: TTRAK

Post by YQN »

I guess it's already old news to most of you but just in case, last week @ sommarhack was released TTRAK, seems promising and a real competitor for maxYMiser, I will have to try it out!

Yes it's a great ST chiptracker, with a really interesting and advanced instrument editor!
And also already quite usable, though it's still a beta version for now.
The coder is working on it toward a final version.

Have you started playing with it already? I'm wondering what it can do that mYM cannot...

Yes i tried it, made a few instruments and patterns.

It features different approaches on timer based modulations.
Also the "FM" modulation explained in the tutorial is new to ST chiptrackers.
There's instrument chaining.
You can also set up a "compressor" styled global volume impact on an instrument.
The tutorials show all this. :)

The frequency wave system is pretty cool.
You can tweak the wave by hand, experiment with this while the instrument is playing, quite like an hardware synth interface. ;)

Couldn’t get FM stuff to work. But then again I’m on Hatari. Which emulators (and version) supports this?

Sounds amazing though, and it’s really easy to learn thanks to the great UI + youtube tutorials! Hats off.

thanks for taking an interest guys :)

Shoggoth - hi :) The FM timer probably isn't working because I made a change to the effect post recording those tutorial videos! Now, the first 4 steps of the timer sequence represent shifts to the core period of the pulse wave - previously this was hard-coded into the effect but i've broken it out now so you can get more varied sound palette.

To start with, set the first 4 steps of the timer waveform to 1,0,1,0. The 1 represent an octave shift. The first and third values are shifts *up*, and the 2nd and 4th are shifts *down*

The real magic is when you apply freqmod to the Square in the detune matrix.

But like all this stuff - it's trial and error mostly until you find your sweet spots. Good luck!

So far used it for creating samples (diiirrrrttyy bass!) but going to start tracking soon too.

This is so great!

Hi gang :)

another cheeky update pushed to https://ttrak2149.com/

This one tackles serious reliability issues around MFP/ACIA.. Thanks to everyone feeding back valuable bug reports. I'm so glad to be tackling these issues before the final release :)

I just got started with it; it's pretty cool!
The tutorials seem to refer frequently to another tracker, which this was based on. What is this tracker? I've only used MaxYMiser on Atari.
Two things I've noticed so far:
Ctrl + works for octave up, but Ctrl - doesn't work for octave down. Or is this due to my setup? (using Hatari at the moment)
The help is some work to navigate; can we have some links to different sections at the start?
Edit: Found the name of the other tracker elsewhere, I think it's Triplex.

Hiya 607, thanks for writing.

TTRAK is a spiritual successor to TraCQ, which was in turn a remix of Triplex by the legendary Big Alec of Delta Force ;)

The codebase is more or less completely different to Triplex now but i do still take the same philosophical approach to the music driver as Big Alec did with Triplex. I could never have entered the world of chip trackers without that initial sourcecode release of Triplex :)

Keyboard shortcuts - they need tidying up before the final release. I'm still changing them here and there and the Help pages may not be 100% accurate. Also, I notice that my Hatari OS X setup produces interesting key mappings out of the box (for example, OCT up and down present on my Macbook on the [ and ] keys to the right of O and P). And to further add to the mix, I am querying the scancodes of the key and so there may be some discrepancies between different nationalities keyboards.

Anyway have fun, make sure you're using the most up-to-date version, and thanks for having a play!

Damo

PS - thanks for the feedback about the Help pages navigation..
