'LAN' (Localtalk RS-422) port to be useful after 30 years?

Post by leech »

So, decided to dive deep into this because it's always bugged me that this port was on the Mega STe / TT030 and Falcon, but was never used for anything. Looking at the specs at least for the first two, it leads into the same Zilog Z85c30 chip as the serial ports do.

So I happened to find this; https://mac68k.info/forums/thread.jspa? ... =0&start=0
which has a nice PDF for implementing LocalTalk from zilog! It even includes assembly code for initializing it.

Could be interesting to enable such a thing in MiNT, or others.

Thoughts?

It could be used to connect Mac MIDI interfaces. Drivers available for Cubase and other MIDI apps.
Ain't no space like PeP-space.

Nice! I've actually looked before and never ran into that information. Interesting.
I'm mainly looking because now I own an Apple IIGS, and am curious if there would be a way to get them to talk to each other, or possibility of printers, never knew there were MIDI interfaces for them.

Hi everyone

Can this port be used with a mac emulator (spectre, aladin or some other one) as a mac serial port ?

I own a MOTU MTP (Mark Of the Unicorn MidiTimePiece, this one) which is a midi patchbay that also act as a midi interface for the Macintosh.

The patchbay allows to send input from Midi IN 1 to any Midi OUT from 1 to 8, and so on for all the 8 Midi INs.

Unfortunately, the patchbay can only be configured from a Mac connected from the serial port (see attached picture), and I was wondering if I could run the configuration software inside a mac emulator on my Mega STE or Falcon, using this RS422 port to communicate with the MTP.

I always wanted to try this, I have Cubase with the LAN MROS driver on my Mega-STE and I have a Yamaha MU90R rack syntheiszer which supports this interface. But no cable in my inventory.

Also the latest version of Midi-Com network, which I use to link my STs together, does support the LAN port. This should be much faster than the network connection over Midi.
