CosmosEx and VanillaMint
CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Hi All,
Apologies if this is a dumb question.
I have been successfully using CosmosEx in single TOS for a couple of years now. However, now I want to explore using multi-tasking operating systems and so decided to install VanillaMint on my TT (I am using the ACSI CosmosEx).
After installing VM, I can still access the drives I have on the internal SD card, however, I can no longer access the shared drive or the configuration drive. When I open the FreeMint folder on the desktop, I can see folders have been created for those two drives, but attempting to access them produces a path not found error.
Both my CE_DD and CE_Sting Program’s are still in the auto folder and run successfully on boot.
I am assuming I need to add the eth0 interface into a configuration file somewhere in VM, but I have no idea where.
Is anybody able to help?
Cheers
Mark

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
I don't know the CE driver work, but if it works by hooking into the GEMDOS trap you might have to run CE_DD after MiNT in the autofolder, as MiNT does not call the old TOS GEMDOS.

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
I recommend upgrading the kernel to the latest from GitHub, I think they fixed some gemdos compatibility recently which solved some of my problems.
Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
In that case not only the kernel, but all kernel modules (*.km, *.xdd, *.xfs, *.xif) must be updated too.

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Thank you for the help, I have updated the CosmosEx device and also tried running CE_DD after VM in the Auto folder, but neither solved the problem, I still cannot access the network or configuration drive in VM. As soon as I remove VM from Auto and reboot to regular TOS, everything works fine, just not when VM is running.
Any other ideas?
If VM does not work, is there a different multitasking operating system that I can use that works OK with CosmosEX?
Thanks
Mark

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Trouble with MagiC and FreeMiNT is that they replace GEMDOS. Which CE_DD is bending to its needs. It's on the TODO list but as usual, spare time is the issue here.
Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
There is this build flag, -DOLDTOSFS, which builds a Mint Kernel using the GEMDOS fs instead of the Mint own FAT driver maybe that could help ?mikro wrote:Trouble with MagiC and FreeMiNT is that they replace GEMDOS. This flag is activated in the minthat Freemint Kernel Config that the Gemdos Hardrive of Hatari works.
There is a mint kernel build with this flag here:

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
I'd say that -DOLDTOSFS is not guaranteed not to build a kernel that will blow your Atari to pieces. Probably noone used it for years, and I would be supprised if it would compile at all.

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
So there is still no support for Shared drive in Magic?
When I open Shared or Config drive in Magic, I see “install.app” (23KB) but it can not be opened or copied!
Will Geneva work with Cosmosex Shared drive?

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
This is because FreeMiNT/MagiC overwrites GEMDOS, on which the shared functionality heavily depends.
AFAIK Geneva could work because it focuses on multitasking only, without affecting file system.

Nice! Now if we can get Geneva to work with the 060 in my Falcon, where my CosmosEX sits, I would be loving it!Gaiyan wrote:I can confirm Geneva works with CosmosEx in all respects rather well.

OMG, how much incompatibility these days in Atari world...leech wrote:Nice! Now if we can get Geneva to work with the 060 in my Falcon, where my CosmosEX sits, I would be loving it!Gaiyan wrote:I can confirm Geneva works with CosmosEx in all respects rather well.

So there is no way for ComsosEx Shared drive to work under MiNT or MagiC?

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Of course it is possible, but for that the shared drive driver has to be made compatible with these operating systems. The easy solution is to make proper filesystem drivers (XFS).

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
As soon as somebody ports CE_DD.PRG into a XFS module it will work flawlessly. :) Not much work, in fact it would be a nice exercise for anyone who would like to learn how to write a kernel module. :)calimero wrote:So there is no way for ComsosEx Shared drive to work under MiNT or MagiC?

"We" certainly can, unfortunately Dan Wilga seems to be cleaning up sources for release for second year now, so ...leech wrote:Now if we can get Geneva to work with the 060 in my Falcon, where my CosmosEX sits, I would be loving it!

I too donated to that cause. Hopefully he is doing well, in the current climate, we have to hope we all pull through this craziness.mikro wrote:"We" certainly can, unfortunately Dan Wilga seems to be cleaning up sources for release for second year now, so ...leech wrote:Now if we can get Geneva to work with the 060 in my Falcon, where my CosmosEX sits, I would be loving it!
Eventually I plan to learn to code to help, working on Python for work, then it will probably be C for side projecs, and eventually assembly.

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Nice to hear that we can expect in future compatibility for Mint
One more question: XFS, filesystem drivers, are compatible between Mint and MagiC?

Re: CosmosEx and VanillaMint
Anyone managed to get networking up and running in mint from ce? I see mention of ce_sting driver. Is that the only driver we have for ce?
