Arcade Games

Post by vebxenon »

I've seen that the ZX UNO team is porting some arcades to their FPGA Board

http://zxuno.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=72

Is there any project to port more arcades to MiST? :)

Pretty interesting, the more HDL code out there the better :)

Some of those cores are already on the MiST but they are trying to replace the ROM. Apparently (according yo the thread) its pretty fiddly as each game has small tweaks (eg. different button mapping). Another problem is nobody wants to get in trouble distributing ROMs, so making a fully packaged binary is not possible.

What they've done so far is port Mr. Do's Nightmare which has a Papillio core, and the ROMs are apparently authorized for distribution.

Yes, you're right but they are working on them and these cores will be released. I play a lot the Pacman core on my MiST  , it's so great to see a full arcade into a FPGA :D

:coffe: I had a look at the MiST Pacman code but it seems it's additional files to apply on top of the PACEDEV version of it, so needs a bit of tinkering just to compile it.

It would make sense to create a common core that e.g. can read ROM files from a folder or a zip file, and maybe have common video converters/upscalers... but thats embarking on a very long road similar to MAME :-)
