Drive not detected

Post by wheeel »

I'm having problems using SCP with a "brand new" (meaning 2007 issue, unused) Sony MFP-920-Z drive. The SCP software doesn't detect it, although when the program starts up the drive is activated (i.e. I hear the head move / drive spin). I've not had problems with other drives.

Any idea what the problem might be or diagnostic tips so that I can get it up and working?

Thanks!

You might need to mod the drive select for it to work ?

I haven't needed to do anything like this before? The drive is not from an Atari, so should be configured for standard PC-compatible use.

An external supply taken from a hard-disk caddy. I used it with other disk drives without problems, but I can check the voltage levels if you think that is a problem.

Not trying to sound dumb, but have you tried a different drive ? I have seen issues with some chips used on the MPF, though probably won't be related to your issue...

That's likely fine for powering the drive. I have seen a couple of 3.5" drives that require both 12v and 5v for power. Normally, all 3.5" drives just need 5v for power.

It looks like this drive's select lines are backwards from normal 3.5" drives, based on the information in the link provided above. Typically, DS0, DS2, and DS3 are OFF (no jumpers) and DS1 is on (jumper). It looks like this model may need DS0 jumpered and DS1 open.

I use a Sony MFP-920-1 drive without any issues. There are no exposed jumpers on this drive, so I suppose that they could be on the board similar to the picture shown. The drive is fully sealed in a metal case, so you can't see the board at all.

Did you try changing to the other drive position in the ribbon cable? The very end (with the twist) is drive 0, and the one between the end and the main connector is drive 1. Also, make sure you don't have the ribbon cable turned around backwards so that the end with a twist is at the SCP board!
