Image conversion from PC to ST?

Post by Ally »

Sorry if this is a Newbie question folks, but are there any applications you know of that will take a standard JPEG and convert it to, say, a NEO or Degas Image? I've thought about resizing it to the STs resolution, saving as, say, a GIF then using a program like GEM-VIEW to convert in STEEM... butt this seems laborious.

Plus I can't find a copy of Gem-View anywhere. Any Ideas?
Thanks

You are describing the best way to convert a JPG image to the ST. Most of the processing has to be done on a PC. Remember that even a small 1024x768 JPG image is over 2 Mb in size when uncompressed. So resizing and reducing the color depth is best done on a PC.

what he ^ said :)

personally, I use photoshop or paintshop pro (depending if i'm at work or not) to edit the image so that it is 16 colours and 320x200 in pixel size, then save as a gif.

I then use XNView (http://www.xnview.com/) to open the gif and save as a Degas PI1 file.

then it's viewable on Atari :)

The netpbm tools are very well suited for this, if you have a Unix-type OS (they don't work so will in the Cygwin port, iirc). Otherwise XnView is indeed quite good.

BTW doing anything involving large JPEGs or GIFs with GemView on a real Atari will take a long time. I think it took 30-60 seconds each to render some JPEGs on my CT2 Falcon 8O (ok, not sure if the CT2 was switched on though, it caused major problems with the built-in IDE drive).

Speed of Light is a good converter tool. I used it a lot back in the day.

I'd highly recommend XnView. I've used it for years and the reason? Not only is it a great (and free!) image viewer and manipulator but it can open and save degas elite images. I think it might even do several other Atari ST specific formats. The image formats it can open and save to is vast.

There's actually an Atari specific version of N-Convert, XN-Views partner in crime (conversion), as well, so I think somewhere there, there is a Atari/ 68k legacy.

Maybe! It's one of the best programmes I've used for diversity of supported image formats. Interestingly it appears that some of the oldest image formats are from a variety of systems.

Perhaps the Atari ST legacy is why I like it so much. :-)

**Updated**

I've just had a thought, alot of very good and interesting software came from France. As it happens, the author is French. He may well have had past experience with Atari systems.
