TOS 2.06 & 4.04 vs EmuTOS ??

Post by KLund1 »

I have seen videos about ST's that mention or use EmuTOS on both hardware and emulation.
There are few, if any, videos directly showing or demonstrating advantages of EmuTOS over TOS 2.06 or 4.04 (STE/Mste & Falcon). Much less, how to use it. The videos seem to assume EmuTOS is better without explaining why.
I am assuming my google searching for such videos are inadequate. (this is usually the case)
My Github EmuTOS page reading shows this subject is so far above my head, the contributors can see stars during the day. My compliments to all of them!
Is there some videos, at the consumer level, to learn and use this ST OS?
Yes, there is lots of reading, but I'm a visual learning, not text.
Any suggestions?

EmuTOS advantages (some only in larger variants):
  • Boots faster
  • Supports about all Atari HW
  • No AUTO-folder fix programs needed
  • No (ACSI/IDE/SCSI) harddisk driver needed as it's builtin
  • Support for more keymaps and languages (all that MiNT would supports)
  • More configurable, can e.g. be built to include just specific features
  • Includes simple command line interface (CLI)
Atari TOS advantages:
  • Some games & apps work only with specific TOS version(s), see: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/emuto ... atible.txt
  • Marginally more memory left for apps (may be relevant for some games & demos on 512k STs)
  • 192k (ST) EmuTOS version lacks some Atari TOS features due to space constraints

Err... Although some dialogs look a bit different, both Atari TOS and EmuTOS offer about same functionality. EmuTOS is just easier to use as you need fewer additional programs.

=> If you use an Atari emulator, just specify EmuTOS binary instead of Atari TOS one?

But if you're also unfamiliar with the use of Atari TOS, EmuTOS manual can help with both: https://emutos.github.io/manual/

I have used EmuTOS only in emulators, but in general I think Atari TOS would be better for STs (partly due to ST SW being older / less compatible with other TOS versions), and EmuTOS for newer Atari machines.

As to general GEM / desktop performance, EmuTOS is a slower in some operations than Atari TOS, and faster in some others. In color modes probably a bit slower on average than Atari TOS, but if that really matters, one should be using NVDI SW to accelerate VDI (OS graphics calls used by GEM / AES).

I have emutos running on one of my STe machines using one of these:

https://sidecartridge.com/products/side ... -atari-st/

and it works fine :)

benefits are the built in drivers for storage.

I can switch to 1.62/2.06 for anything that doesn't work with emutos.

For me, I almost exclusively use EmuTOS in my STE (or my STs with 256k ROM decoder) because of the built-in hard disk driver and the better FAT16 file system support. Makes data exchange with the PC so much easier.
