Video of an Atari STFM playing SIDs with playsid

Post by danboid »

I was quite impressed that a regular 8 Mhz Atari 520STFM could do such a decent job of playing SID files. It's definitely not 100% accurate but you can make the tunes out well enough.

To record this video I used an Atari 520STFM connected into a LiNKFOR SCART to HDMI converter using a Exxos RGB to SCART cable which was plugged into a MacroSilicon USB HDMI video capture adapter and recorded with cheese under Debian 12.

I would love to see someone write a SID player for the Uzebox. If the Atari ST can play SID files then I reckon the Uzebox should be able to handle it too.

playsid ST can be downloaded from:

jam plays more chiptune formats but playsid has the advantage of being able to be run off a single floppy.

Is jams sid playback any better than playsid, I'm not sure. I expect they share the same sid playback code?

Jam mentions the playsid plugin so I guess it's the same code:

I just wrote the following in the YT comments for your video before realising that I should've really replied here instead. My comment:
Great track and cool to know that I inspired this video!

My STFM has 4 MB RAM and PlaySID works fine for me. My STFM is still using the stock TOS 1.02.

What did your write this track with? Have you written any tracks for the Atari's YM chip?

Comments are welcome on the channel too ;) I made the track with GoatTracker. There are several YM tracks on my YouTube channel, plus the occasional SID or POKEY... I do have Genesis/Megadrive tunes and Gameboy as well but I never uploaded them to YouTube.

All I got with Playsid ST was some noise instead of the snare drum (which uses noise so that makes sense), and no melody whatsoever. I don't remember what TOS I have but I guess it's 1.62...
