Forum phpBB email alerts

Post by viking272 »

I've noticed that I no longer receive emails from Atari-Forum for posts where I am quoted nor do I get email alerts for private messages.

My last email alert was 6 weeks ago from: adminteam@atari-forum.com

Is there an issue with phpBB? I'm pretty sure my mail provider is working fine as I can see emails from 'adminteam' 6 weeks ago, where they were every few days going back months. I've received PM's this week but no email alerts.

I also saw that dml posted an issue in the Bad Mood topic too.

Interestingly, when I go to Control Panel, Manage Notifications, I can see all the quoted messages. Has something been disabled maybe?

As I'm also in the same boat with not receiving email alerts about PMs, I've done some digging on various phpBB support sites but only come up with fixes that are already in place. For instance within your User Control Panel > Board Preferences > Email notification options there is an option to switch on/off to state that you do / don't want emails after a PM is sent. Mine's switched on and I'm not getting the messages.

I've logged it with Darren to take a look at as I've done as much as I can with my limited phpBB knowledge.

Just an update from me:

I seem to be unable to send any emails to other members of this forum.

My "Email notification options" are all set to "on".

The error does not have to be within phpBB. You should also check the mail transfer agent's log, typically somewhere under /var/log. Perhaps there is a configuration issue there, which prevents the MTA from forwarding the messages to the respective users' mail servers.

Have you made some system updates? maybe, php broke down. Maybe SPF, DKIM or DMARc is missing.

Oh,yeah. And that crap: https://techgenix.com/basic-authenticat ... -disabled/

As Christian was saying there will be a log to check. e.g.

/var/log/maillog
/var/log/mail.log
/var/adm/maillog
/var/adm/syslog/mail.log
If it's not there, look up /etc/syslog.conf. You should see something like this

mail.* -/var/log/maillog

Use the tail command to see the last entries in the log:
tail -f /var/log/maillog

Most of my issues I've had for mail not being sent is a rejection due to something expiring or changing on the ISP side.

Looking at one of the last mail messages I received the next hop from the AF server is:
mrelayeu.kundenserver.de (mreue011 [213.165.67.103])

Yes I think this is part of the issue.

The same issue seems to be causing new members from not getting their welcome email either.

I've chased him a few times, but he's not yet had the time to fix it.

Ah OK.
Do you have access to the Linux shell on the webserver at all? Maybe you can check some of the latest log entries out?
e.g. tail -f /var/log/mail.log

Using Thunderbird (or such), can you try to log in to the provider with the mail credentials? Maybe a recently activated 2fa is in the way or the smtp servers have changed. See what happens when you try to send a mail from there

Makes sense to use own infrastructure. The IP of the forum is from fasthosts.co.uk which is part of the German company United Internet (among others Ionos or 1&1).

Has the problem with email alerts or sending emails been fixed?

I don't think so but I am looking forward to the expert's feedback.

Thank you.

Nothing so far. I've been nagging Dal via FB Messenger and handing across the links to this thread and others where the problem has been noticed.

There's not much more that I can do about it as only Dal has the access to fix this.

I don't want to upset anyone but it seems like Dal doesn't have much time and/or interest in maintaining Atari-Forum anymore. Perhaps it would be good if somebody else would take over before the forum degrades further. I'm afraid users will eventually give up and leave the forum when one issue after another takes weeks or months to resolve.

It's almost impossible to contact or stay in touch with members of this forum without email alert or direct email. It makes me very unhappy. Most users here are not even aware and will not check the private messages section on a regular basis to overcome the issue.

Right .. it's being worked on. I've had the following message from Dal via FB (I've put in spacing etc. to make it easier to read).
I'm still battling with the email notifications. The problem is that the account we were using through ionos.fr has now expired. I've opened an account with Twilio Sendgrid and had to go through a load of hoops to get the account verified.

I'm nearly there, except they have helpfully set up the 2FA to go to the adminteam@atari-forum.com account which isn't actually a mailbox anywhere, so I'm just waiting on them to fix that before I can go ahead and reconfigure the forum.

Sorry it's taking so long. A mixture of looking at options, trying to set stuff up, waiting on support and life... It's being dealt with though.

Did this ever get solved? I directed someone to register for this forum so that he could see and download attachments. According to that person, the registration email never arrived. (And yes, he did look into the spam folder, too.)

I now guess so, too. I tried registering (with a different user name and email address, obviously) and never got an email, either.

Maybe one of the admins can comment? It would be sad to see this forum die because of technical difficulties.

I've not heard back from Dal with any updates as to what he's been trying in the background. I'm in the dark as much as everyone else is.
