SainT 2.30 and 2.40 not working on old WinXP laptop

SainT 2.30 and 2.40 not working on old WinXP laptop

...whereas version 2.21 works fine.
In particular, SainT 2.30 simply crashes when started, whereas SainT 2.40 doesn't show any menus (and when invoked with F12, the program crashes); it's also very slow, and sounds are distorted.
My laptop is a Compaq Presario 1215EA (192Mb RAM, 20Gb hard disk, Windows XP SP3, last version of DirectX distributed in 2010.)
Anyone experienced something similar?
