GamebaseST v3.1 finally released

Post by Goldrunner »

Here (at long last) is the latest development version of GamebaseST, namely v3.1d. This release assumes you know how to set the database up since there is no help in this area. I wanted to get this release out sooner rather than later hence the lack of documentation for this. Seasoned GBST users will of course have no problem. Also, many apologies that there is no upgrade path from previous versions, the changes where just to numerous and an upgrade would not have been feasible.

So what do you get with this version::

3125 games (72 hard disk based)
1018 music files
13400 screenshots
764 Adverts
1600 boxscans
500 diskscans
1168 manuals
131 maps
534 reviews
170 solutions
…and a whole host of cheats and tips.

Please note that I have added this to emule and until people download it from me I will be sharing this alone. In other words, please be patient until others have it and start sharing. The whole archive has been split into separate archives:

Gamebase.ST.v3.1.database (1.73 MB)
Gamebase.ST.v3.1.emulators (5.72 MB)
Gamebase.ST.v3.1.screenshots (115.89 MB)
Gamebase.ST.v3.1.music (37.31 MB)
Gamebase.ST.v3.1.games (1.43 GB)

Please type Gamebase.ST to find all the above on emule!

The extras (adverts, boxscans, etc) have not yet been added since I wish to get the above sharing first, once this occurs then the extras will be added. This means it is to everyone’s advantage to share the above files to get the extras released. The database is fully functional without the extras anyway, it just makes it more complete.

If anyone wants me to split the games down further then please let me know.

Of course if you could send it to me by post I will upload it to Usenet Paul  and this time I will split the archive correctly :D

Ahhh, I can't believe it!! I only downloaded GBST last weekend, and just my luck, a new version comes out a week later :o

Still, I'm not complaining ;)

I'll hold off on getting this new lot though until it reaches http://gbst.atomas.com/ though as the downloads there are lightning fast :).
Hopefully the chain from Paul at Edonkey----------->Megar at http://gbst.atomas.com (probably via retrogamer somewhere) won't take too long.

I think you should choose a way to distribute it, and stick to it.

Currently, the gbst webpage has a link to my server to download v1.2
When you click on it, you are proposed to download either 1.2 or 2.4

You should upload the new version to the ftp I gave you access to, in that way, the new version will be available on the web for everybody, and not only the very small minority usenet-freak. But that my two cents.

PM me if you want help.

BTW, my opinion is that you should only have two archive : GBST-main and GBST-games. The main archive would not be that big (compared to the game one), and it would be easier to download. Of course I am not talking about the Extras. (see http://gbst.atomas.com to see what I did on v2.4)

When it's on P2P and Usenet as well as the various websites, I'll sort out an announcement properly on Atari Legend.

Gives us a few days to all sort out who's doing what with v3.1 and to give links to the various sources it can be acquired from.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

As a Linux user, UseNet is the easiest means of getting it. As indicated above, if you can seperate the games from the rest, I'd be happy, since the front-end isn't useful to me yet (until I get a Linux version sorted).

There is no "Photos" folder ?

I am downloading the others folders. It should be available on my servers in a day or two for mass download.
I still don't understand why you don't upload it yourself directly on the server, and keep the official GBST web page in sync.

Can I remove the old 1.2 and 2.4 versions ?
Should I leave 2.4 Extras or should I remove everything ?

Post by ldaneels »

Greetings,
Thanks for posting the new GBST, great stuff !
That being said the Extras are nowhere to be found. Any chance to see them on Emule, Torrent or FTP ?
Thanks & keep up the awesome work.

Is there a problem with the GamebaseST 3.1d file from the atomas site?

Ive extracted it to the same folder as GameBase but when I run gamebase I keep getting the no gamebase folders to choose from error message :(

When I extract it it creates a folder entitled GBST database v3.1d does this need renaming in any way??

when you install the GBST frontend you should also get a executable (think its called the toolbox) where you can setup the directory of the database.

Thanks megar its now working correctly for me now.

Though I have encountered the same strange bug I ran into with version 2.4 namely only single screenshots are loaded for each game and no amount of clicking on them scrolls through them. This in spite of switching between gamebase and mame style and back again under the options menu, with version 2.4 I ended up downloading and reinstalling a number of time till the probelm eventually righted itself on the 4th attempt.

-edit-

Ive worked out what was wrong i needed to uncheck the always bring zoomed pictures to the front option, now all the games load all screenshots.

Can I ask what program others recommend to accesss the music playback on Gamebase. It doesnt work with my widnows media player, do I have to install one of the listed players or is there a plug in that I can use for windows media player or winamp?

Ideally something that will also work in conjunction with Firefox to allow me to listen to music featured on soem ST websites.

if you go to the Tools -> Options menu in GBST, then click on the Music Players tab, it'll let you choose which music players to use for which formats. I use Jam, ModPlug, STSound and Media Player.

The database download on the atomas site seems incomplete, no "scripts" folder, for instance :-(
Edit: Found it on emule :-)

Thank's for the work you people put into this!

This folder *is* in the "GBST v3.1d.rar". Maybe your download wasn't complete. Check that the file really is 1,079,484 byte long.

Megar, are you also going to host the "extras" folder ?
I would have already put all of this version on Usenet but there were errors in the DVDs I was sent, this is being resolved now so I will soon put them all on Usenet anyway.
This is why it is important to zip or RAR ST disk images before sending via the net or CD/DVD, that way any new errors will be detected.

It is a good thing that Megar is hosting these files, at his own expense, I will still put the whole collection on to Usenet because I can (yes including my great NFOs), but I will also upload whatever Megar is missing to his server, so soon enough everyone should be able to get GBST quickly, easily and freely.
