MagxNet via NetUSB on Falcon

Post by Bengy »

I'm running into a wall with Magxnet on my Falcon with NetUSB adapter. Can someone clarify for me the Magx_rc.net settings questions below in bold? (I stripped out the variables not in use.) Just want to make sure I'm not spinning my wheels with the very basics.

It's times like these I wish MagiC Online was still.... Online.

# Sample MAGX_RC.NET file for configuring MagiCNet
# Modifiziert von Ekkehard Flessa

# Where is your /etc path (please use a VFAT partition)
etc_path f:\root\etc

# Absolutely necessary! Aktiviert den Socket
ifconfig lo0 addr 10.0.0.500 up (What IP do I put here?)

# Default route for Masquerades, NATs, proxys etc
# aktuell keine gesetzt 2003-12-20 Ef
route add default en0 gw 10.0.0.100 (This is where I put in my router's IP, correct?)

Hi Bengy, here is my magx_rc.net that works on my Hades:

Code: Select all

etc_path H:\MAGXNET\etc
ifconfig lo0 addr 127.0.0.1 up
ifconfig ne0 addr 192.168.1.51 up
ifconfig ne0 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add 192.168.1.0 ne0
route add default ne0 gw 192.168.1.1
ifconfig lo0 addr 127.0.0.1 up - required loopback device (should always be 127.0.0.1 as far as I know)
ifconfig ne0 addr 192.168.1.51 up - Atari ip address for my ethernet device driver (ne0)
ifconfig ne0 netmask 255.255.255.0 - and the netmask
route add 192.168.1.0 ne0 - network device actual network
route add default ne0 gw 192.168.1.1 - address of router/gateway

make sure you take care of the CR/LF endings of this file as it won't work without being saved properly.

I'm getting "gateway cannot be a network" error flash upon boot. With the following...

etc_path C:\etc (I copied the etc folder here, long file names are on)
ifconfig lo0 addr 127.0.0.1 up (I left this alone)
ifconfig ne0 addr 192.168.1.51 up (What should go here?)
ifconfig ne0 netmask 255.255.255.0 (Assuming this doesn't change)
route add 192.168.1.0 ne0 (What should go here?)
route add default ne0 gw 10.0.0.1 (This is the IP to my router, is this the right spot for it?)

Bengy, TheNameOfTheGame answered all your queries in his last post? I will try and re-word it for you perhaps:

ifconfig lo0 addr 127.0.0.1 up (I left this alone)
* yes because that is localhost ip, leave alone, same on all computers
ifconfig ne0 addr 192.168.1.51 up (What should go here?)
* This is the IP address you want your Atari to have
ifconfig ne0 netmask 255.255.255.0 (Assuming this doesn't change)
* Assumption correct
route add 192.168.1.0 ne0 (What should go here?)
* This means the start of your network, the very first ip '0'.
route add default ne0 gw 10.0.0.1 (This is the IP to my router, is this the right spot for it?)
* Yes 'gw' stands for gateway, that is your router address. So going by your router address you have a completely different IP setup to TheNameOfTheGame, you need an Atari IP of something like 10.0.0.30* or whatever you want it to be in your network and network start address of 10.0.0.0

Hope that makes more sense?

Shouldn't the gw address be your router ip?
I'd imagine it's 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254

Yes, but just wondering why there is a mix of Class C (192.168.0.0) and Class A addresses (10.0.0.0).

E.g. If Bengy manages the router by pointing your browser to 10.0.0.1
If that's correct then it should all work

That's because he was using TheNameOfTheGames IP addresses and not changing them

At the end of MagiC loading - before desktop boots - I'm getting the error:
"cannot add route: Call for non implemented errno message"
GATEWAY cannot be a NETWORK

Any ideas? My configuration file is:

etc_path C:\etc
ifconfig lo0 addr 127.0.0.1 up
ifconfig ne0 addr 10.0.0.300 up
ifconfig ne0 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add 10.0.0.0 ne0
route add default ne0 gw 10.0.0.1

10.0.0.300 is not a valid ip. Where did you get that from?

10.0.0.0 is a broadcast address. You certainly don't want to configure your interface to that address.

Also, 10.0.0.x is an address range typically used by DHCP servers. If you just want to configure a local network, that should normally be something like 192.168.x.x

Bengy the maximum IP on any network is 255, so you cannot have 300.

ps - everyone is confused by your router address. Are you sure this is your router ip.

Got it.
Not sure of anything related to this at this point :)

According to my Mac which is connected to the same router via WiFi:

I have the Falcon connected via NetUSB and a ethernet wifi bridge (which works fine with UIP-tool):

The only network addr you provide to the route command is the 1st one.
So don't execute the 1st route command.

Assuming your bridge is does not make it's own subnet, try these 2 command
ifconfig ne0 adr 10.0.0.201 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default ne0 gw 10.0.0.1 metric 1

Assuming the address 201 is not used.... if it is, then just use the next free address

I did do that, thanks. Note that step 2 on that page links to a directory, not the files directly. I went through the files and downloaded etherne.zip which contains the enic3.mif file it says I should use. The rest of the Magnet files I got from this forum, where a member posted the MagiCNet 1.4.2 beta. (I could not find a MagicNet archive that had enic3.mif included.). Not sure who to contact to get that page updated to it links directly to the right files.

Thank you Wong (and everyone else!). I can now boot without an error messages. I pinged the Falcon from the Mac and I get:

PING 10.0.0.201 (10.0.0.201) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 10.0.0.201 ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 0ms

--
Whereas before it wouldn't even find the IP. So I think I'm close, if not at the finish line.

That looks like its a matter to also configure your router. the ping packet will reach the router, but the router does not know where to send it because it does not know about your "201" address.

There is usually some way to reserve fixed IP addresses in your router. This will also solve the problem that your MAC (which obtains its address through DHCP) does not accidently get the same IP as your falcon.

You should also try the other way around, pinging your mac and/or router from the falcon. I would expect that this already works.

I think i did setup MagicNet before but I cannot remember it.... but it should follow Mintnet as far as i can tell

Have you the set the required C:/ETC folder.... or where ever it should be located on MagiX.
If it is not, then networking will not work.
You can take a look at the required file inside /ETC folder from my webpage

edit... I looked at the download page of the NetUSB website, there is no files for STEP 4.
so you are probably missing those needed files. You need to remove the txt extension, if it is there on the download from my site.
I hope you can grab from my website, but you have to modify them to your subnet / environment.

Should be the same as with MiNT. MagxNet will look up most files in u:\etc, so you have to setup a symlink to c:\etc if that is where the files are located (see also the sources, https://github.com/th-otto/magxnet/blob ... ket.h#L139). The magxconf tool should take care of that, if the variable "etc_path" is specified in magx_rc.net.

There may still be some issues though if c:\etc is on a filesystem that does not allow long filenames. Filenames like "resolv.conf" will then be truncated.

Am I wrong that - assuming Magxnet is finally setup properly - the next step is to simply the launch iConnect that's included in the Magxnet beta archive? (at least for ASH products like CAB, Emailer, Fifi). Do I do the iConnect installation process with CAB and then replace the iConnect.prg file with the MagxNet one?

From the Falcon can you ping the router on 10.0.0.1?
Putting .201 on the Falcon may clash with another device if you have other devices on your network.
Usually your router will run DHCP to give IP addresses out to devices that ask for one. It could be that its given out .201 address to another device and therefore it can't find the Falcon.
Try a higher address on your Falcon config as Wong also suggested, like 10.0.0.240
