Looking for Dick2 by Ardisoft

Post by cb »

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a program called Der Dialog-Backgrounder aka DICK2. It was released as a freeware several years ago, unfortunately the link on the official website is dead: http://www.ardisoft.de/Produkte/Dick/dick.html

Does anybody has it? Not the dick2d.zip file, which is actually a demo-version, but the full version?

Was: Looking for Dick2 by Ardisoft Now: Unfortunate naming

Post by shoggoth »

I’ve never been looking for Dick 2, no. I’m happy as it is.

But then again! Unfortunate naming! Fun!

I’m hereby hijacking this thread. You know of any other applications which have unfortunate yet amusing names?

On the Amiga, there’s a NES emulator called ANES. The author claims it wasn’t on purpose.

I've figured out why the full version of Dick2 does absolutely nothing: its resource file (which contains the background textures) is missing. Since the demo version actually has the missing file, here is what should be a fully working version of the program. Also uploading an older v1.1 just for the record. Its resource file is different. And for those who wonder what it does, a screenshot showing the background textures that Dick2 adds to some program's windows and to Taskbar's background. An absolutely useless therefore essential little utility, that doesn't work with all programs though! :P

"Attack of the Dangerous Alien Gun Turrets from Jupiter's Third Moon"
"Lobotomy Invaders"

Applications: 1st Word, 2nd Word, 3rd Word
Name confusion: MagiC (Operating system), Magic (Library). Magic was later renamed to TrueMagic.

btw - while Dick2 isn't that useful on XaAES (since it already has support for textured backgrounds), it is kind of neat for other AESs. And I do like the texture in the screenshot; subtle yet gives that little extra touch.

Actually you cant use Xaaes textures if you have gradients already enabled on Xaaes.cnf. It has to be one or the other. And Xaaes textures colours are incorrect in 256 colours mode since v1-18 I think (unless it had been fixed recently).

It has not been fixed.

XaAES converts all textures to the old standard GEM palette in 256 colour mode, so if you set XaAES to use that specific palette as system palette it will work. But most would certainly prefer to use NVDI palette instead - I know I do...

Thanks for the explanation. I'm using the NVDI palette as well.
