Chipo Django 1

Post by insane »

Rabenauge released a new mod chip music disk both for Amiga as well as Atari STE/Falcon030-RGB at the Deadline 2021 demo party in Berlin last weekend.
Get it @pouet.net: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=90085 and have fun!

Because VGA means line-doubling which modifies the timing of the horizontal "copper" interrupts - those need to be handled differently (count*2 I believe) and as the oldschool organizer @deadline and the author of the ATARI port I simply ran out of time to fix that. So -> RGB only :)

There's a nice a variety in the songs, and demo looks good on STE!

However, at least under Hatari Falcon emulation, the colors look weird compared to STE:

I tested the STE code on Hatari - but the Falcon030 code was only tested on real hardware (ParCP+Parrun)- and works as intended (i.e. looks the same as on STE - no purple in the upper part) - so I can't vouch for that on Hatari.
Oh: when running on Falcon i use the Videl to set up an 320x273 videomode but I kept the border opening code intact as it didn't bother my Falcon.
I also fine tuned the Videl Videomode to start the "copper" at the exact same line as on the STE. Maybe therein lies the problem with Hatari? just a guess though

Here's a screengrab from my Falcon030 running the demo in RGB mode. (Falcon030 -> OSSC -> Avermedia GC311 HDMI Capture)
Please PM me if you need any help improving Hatari's Falcon030 code - it IS my most used emulator after all :)

because (as you know :) ) Hatari doesn't correctly support Videl (and TT Shifter) yet . E.g palette change or video register change in HBL,

ah yeah - of course - the Falcon030 version is just Falcon compatible - i.e. Overscan - it still uses Timer-B for Palette changes.
Good point Cyprian! When Chipo Django 2 is/will be finished its engine will be split for STe and Falcon (i.e. 256 color mode for Falcon, no Timer-Rasters, simply using more colors) which will then allow VGA and Hatari compatibility :) - and of coz I'll backport the engine to Django01

Thanks to do this mister Insane!

You can share your next release to make tests if it's possible.

And maybe this short code can help you for the next time ?

Cheers

Ah, I should have realized palette tricks were used also on Falcon.

Since Laurent moved to coding Falcon demos / games instead of developing Hatari Falcon emulation, Videl emulation support has not really gone forward. DSP side has had improvements since, and 030 MMU support came from Previous emulator, with WinUAE providing the 030 cache emulation (with and without MMU). Nicolas is looking mostly to ST/STE and CPU core stuff. Like Laurent, Thomas has very little time for Hatari nowadays. I have nowadays less time for Hatari too, and I'm looking at non-HW related emulation stuff (debugger / profiler / tracing, remains of SDL v1 -> v2 transition, Python stuff updates, misc bugs).

I.e. external contributions to improve Videl would be welcome. :-)

(If somebody starts looking into that, please post stuff to the mailing list and discuss best approaches, instead of working in silence and at end providing huge changes that are too large to be properly reviewed.)

Multi platform is very cool. I have to check it out on real hw though.
Where can I get a disk image of the Amiga version? For ST I can create it on my own...

@ssb: I've been using http://www.exe2adf.com/ with very good results. Noted though - the next release will also contain the disk images :)
