Blitter and sprites with transparency

If I was to copy a 4 bitplane sprite to a 4 bitplane "screen", how would you go about having a transparent colour? e.g you copy a 32x32 sprite to a destination but you want colour 0 of that sprite to NOT overwrite the background?

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

Ahhh okay I get it, I assumed the X jump/skip register (whatever it is called) was 32 (24) bit - well enough to jump around a full 4mb.

That pisses all over my idea then!

I also assume it is unsigned? Not sure where this would be useful, so kind of reflection maybe.

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

Ahh... I forgot that. The STE's linewidth register is only 8 bits, it's the Falcon that has a 16 bit linewidth register. So scrolling one huge buffer can't be done on the STE. Wait so the scroll registers are not big enough to deal with a very large map? Surely you just change the base address when...

Re: Stevie Wonder Extension

I never heard of this extension before and searches reveal nothing but classic songs for me, does anyone have a link or other to some docs/downloads? On the up side and as a side note, search for Stevie Wonder - Pastime Paradise. I knew Coolio had sampled one of his songs but I did not know that he ...

I understood that that was a normal thing to do, change the letter. I think maybe a couple of of extensions got shitty about it.

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

Yeah I figure why not! You could remove the need for any tile/map logic and even better you could load an entire level from a hard disk and it be a completely "free form" image, down side is someone would need to draw it. Of course you could still pre-render a large level from tiles. Now w...

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

Okay that does sound fine in fact. So if my calcs are correct, 3mb is around 90 320x200 screens (32K each) which means 90X320=28,800 pixels on the X axis. So that then means 6.4 seconds x 90 = 576 seconds to scroll the entire "level". 576/60=9.6 minutes of level which is a lot. That does s...

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

I am just doing some calculations on some ideas, what is the "rule of thumb" scroll rate of games? I am talking about scrolling shooter so say R-Type or Blood Money? At 50Hz if you scroll a pixel per VBL then you are scrolling 50 pixels a second which seems very high. I am thinking one wou...

Depending on your TOS version (and I know this does not resolve all situations where a working button is needed) but you can do a CTRL, ALT, DEL to do a soft reset until you get your switch fixed.

Re: STE Hardware scrolling techniques

It is true that nowadays on a 4mb STE you could reserve 3mb for screen and still have a meg for samples, code, sprites, etc and you would have a virtual resolution of 30,720x200 which is a big level. But back then half meg would be limiting your game... Also, this does not allow for infinite scrolli...

Re: Blitter timings (again)

Okay this is a real tangent for this discussion (and I have been wrong about the Blitter before here) but my understanding is that HOG mode is a hindrance in many scenarios. You are better off doing what you want on the CPU and when you have finished (and the Blitter is not running) just starting it...

Re: Ruff 'n' Tumble on Atari STE? Wow...

This looks sooooo good. Looking forward to it. I am sure there was a survey done here some years back about the RAM size for STE users, I think most where 4mb (something like in the 90%ish). I would also guess most would have a HD facility too now (but not sure). Okay if a game fits in half or one m...

STE Hardware scrolling techniques

So I have been looking back at my old coding techniques and I always had a problem with the most efficient way of doing scrolling on the STE. If your playfield was say 640x400 then you would just allocate 128k and scroll around it perfectly, easy use of the scroll registers and then a source address...

Thought experiment. I was hoping to find an ID to use on a MIDI or serial network, I know it could be typed in but wanted to automate it If there was a serial number, CPU number or other then... I could not randomly generate but I wanted it to be locked to a machine (i.e. not change), I suppose it c...

Unique ID of unit.

I was just thinking about an idea I had years ago for some software. Was it possible to grab a unique (i.e. serial) number from the ST?

If you could, would this change with TOS upgrade or other?
