couple of new STOS demoscreens

Postby thomas3 » Thu Oct 04, 2018 12:51 pm

Hi all,

Been messing with new effects in STOS recently. Here's a couple of new little intros, with effects that I don't think have been done in STOS before - hope that you like them.

And yes, before anyone asks, they do use a sprinkling of assembly to speed some stuff up :D. The guts and heart of these are STOS, though!!

Bye!
Tom xx

Awesome. I loved the PAL.TOS. Scrollers gave me a lovely laugh too!

You could have submitted these to Deadline you know!!!

More please :) Good to see you active!

Wietze

Hombre!
<3 that feedback is awesome. You know, when I was making these, I was kind of struck all of a sudden with a "why the hell am I not writing just in ASM?" feeling of shame. But then I realised that by making them this way, I'm able to get away with shitty approximations of other people's work

I have a couple more things up my sleeve...
Have I missed Deadline?!?!

Ace demos Thomas! PAL.TOS is a fantastic effect. There is a similar plasma effect on an Amiga demo using rambo.mod maybe by The Silents.
That would be a super effect to convert to STOS.

FIRE.TOS looks good too.
I never thought to block up that effect.
It's good to see that font again put to good use.
Still got, still working: Atari 4Mb STe, 520STFM, 2.5Mb STF.
Hardware: Cumana CSA 354, Ultimate Ripper, Blitz Turbo, Synchro Express II (US and UK Versions).

I wasn't so fond of FIRE.TOS, but I really like PAL.TOS. I think its plasma effect looks much nicer and both its scroll text and music are more to my liking. :-)

(Both work fine from Hatari GEMDOS HD, so they don't need disk image, zip would be fine too.)

However, FIRE.TOS doesn't seem to work properly with EmuTOS. With that, only the scroll text is visible, not the fire effect.

Absolute LOL at your existential crisis played out in the PAL.TOS scrolltext.

You kick ass Tom

Nice shots !
Answer to your question in PAL.TOS is that ....well nevermind :P
Don't ask why, but what and how !
I, for a GFA basic user would say that effects are great, but your screens are lame (flame war muhahahahahaha )
Never went into STOS but, it's some shell for ASM routines, so your screens should be better for sure
For me, as i didn't know asm, i went into STE which proved to enable GFA basic to achieve quite cool stuff (easily confering to pouet comments) :)
Maybe you could give it a go (STE), and do even better :)
I bet you have the ATARI ST love, that's so great, go on, keep on , procrastinate the rest :P
1991 screens aren't things to beat, beat this one :

Never give up, stay Atari ! :)

He'll never beat that as GFA is better than STOS ;)

Haha, awesome. Scene feedback!!! (Spkr, are you co-ordinating this in an attempt to get me to produce more stuff?!)

Although, if I had thought anyone would actually look at these, I would have put some more effort in to their presentation, and probably not released the fire one at all

@tomchi - as for the relative merits of STOS versus GFA... Of course STOS is worse!! Its command handling is insanely slow, and you can't use interrupts without writing yourself an extension or including assembly! I only persist with it due to perversity and nostalgia... I love your demo though. That rotozoom is as impressive af.

For some STOS with no assembly and not even compilation, have you seen this old school poo I made last year?

wow ! ok so you've already beaten my example :)
Gfa interpreter will never allow that speed, unless one inlines some ASM :)

Really cool !

Dude, I promise you, it'd be possible in GFA! The question is: are you are the kind of person who'd spend three months optimising your routines? .... unfortunately I am :(

Hey, I had an idea just now. We should make a joint prod called "duelling BASICs". Kind of like the classic scene from the movie Deliverance, but with you on GFA and me on STOS! (I think it's only fair that I take the role of the weird kid)

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? 8O

Your screens are really amazing! I’m in fact most amazed by your previous demos (The Interpreter Demos) that I just discovered and that makes me ashamed to have posted here some very old (lame) STOS screens of 1993 a few weeks ago…

Bravo! Carry on (please!)

Ah, that's too kind. But I promise - if you tried STOS again today with a "grown up" brain, you'd surprise yourself with what's achievable :)

Dude - I've had a really crazy idea to take this further.

What about two separate STE demos that sync over midi?? One STOS, one GFA. So it'd run on TWO STEs side by side! And obviously the demos would interact... and have the duelling banjos theme, synchronised between the two!!

I'm legitimately down for this!
Or is this too crazy?!

In fact I already had a grown up brain... That's the sad thing...
