Falcon: Painters or converters that save in raw format

Postby joska » Tue Jul 17, 2018 8:48 pm

Which painters and/or graphics converters can save images in raw (framebuffer/screen) format on the Falcon?

Escape Paint saves .TRP which is more or less raw + 8 bytes header, IIRC.

Thanks mikro, I just checked out Escape Paint and it also has a 100% RAW format, but it seems like Escape Paint only works with truecolour graphics. I should have mentioned that I need to work with 8-bit images too :)

Photochrome should manage Falcon formats. I'm not sure if Doug added it to some internal betas, so if the latest release doesn't have it we should prod Doug to release a newer version :)
is 73 Falcon patched atari games enough ? ^^

Have you checked out True Image's native file save format? Looking at the back of the box, haven't dug into it.

May be a lowly suggestion :) One of two basic programs I ever wrote was to copy pixel by pixel an ST screen display and flip it for printing hot iron prints. True, that only saves the displayed image DPI, but unless you're moving the bit map to another medium or platform, it is WYSIWYG. Anything else and you'll be scrunching it anyway, unless I'm missing something.

Believe Image Copy can save screen captures in RAW format too.

Sorry, have to throw this in :) One of the best imaging and paint applications for the TOS platform, IMHO, is Photoline. Prolly not what you seek, uncompresses TIF, it also may have it's own raw save format, with the (subjective) benefit of moving work to the PC version for output. Never the less, still enjoying the use from the $129 price tag I see in the box from Home Systems House :)

I downloaded Photochrome 6.21 from Doug's site just now but from what I can see it only targets ST/STE hardware.

Writing a converter is an option, yes. But with the popularity of the Falcon in the scene community I would be surprised if such a tool hasn't already been made.

ImageCopy is an old favourite of mine and was the first thing I tried. I could not find a way to save in screen format, but it does save in IFF which is a rather simple format to interpret. So I might just use that.

I have never tried True Image. Does it support 8-bit images too?

Multiple, maybe of interest to you
Import and export

Art Director
Doodle
IMG
ImageLab
MTV
RayTracer
Prism Paint
TIFF
True Paint

Import only
Degas (Elite)
GIF
IFF
PCX
Photo CD

With Image Copy isn't there a screen capture feature? Been a while. Was thinking it as an ACC, you can select the screen portion you want to capture from within whatever FX program you are using. Sadly, my hardware is still spread all over, with nothing to boot :(

If you aren't after a 100% RAW format, my all time favourite, Pixart, saves bitplane data directly, too. With a small header + palette.

That is perfect :) Thanks, I'll have a look at the format and see if I can figure it out.
