And Linux distros make it not easy in fact. They make lot of changes, so old builds may not work as well. I experienced it myself with my SW.
Unfortunately I was not able to start 3.7 in Ubuntu - it says that file is not executable, although properties say that it is ???? Confused. especially as old Steem 3.2 started, only problem is that no sound (but it needs just installing Portaudio) .

Hi, I'd rather you had bumped the "Linux/Unix build" thread instead.
It's a question of fun, time and priorities.
The Linux build scores very low in all three aspects for me. More a drag than anything. :(
Beside the problems you mentioned, don't forget that when you release more builds, you must give some support too.

I recently hit the same issue on latest Ubuntu, and I finally got it working.
Key point is that Steem binaries are 32-bit, and your system is 64-bit. Hence "not executable" message.
You need to install the 32-bit executable support on your OS (i386), libc, and a few other libraries.

It is just a matter of adding a few additional packages. Unfortunately, I dumbly didn't take any note, so I can't help more precisely.

Ah, did not see that separated thread, it is very low (last post spring of 2016) .
"release more builds, you must give some support too." - well, I forgot about it totally, but maybe because my recent activity was about project where giving support to users is something at last place :D
I appreciate your straight and honest answers.
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

That makes sense. But Steem 3.2 is 32-bit too (and very old), and it worked ... Anyway, I will try to install suggested. Thanx.

To be fair we all do what we can but giving support isn't much fun compared with improving emulation or introducing exciting features. I certainly didn't branch Steem to give support but that's the way it is.

By digging in my shell history, the following should be enough do get XSteem 3.7 working in recent Ubuntu 64-bit:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt install libstdc++6:i386 libxxf86vm1:i386 libasound2:i386

Steven: I'm just trying out Steem V.3.9.4 and setting screenshots to PNG still gives me BMP... any setting that I missed?
