rare arcade game not emulated anywhere else

Postby djmartins » Tue Jul 09, 2019 3:30 am

It is called Death Race by Exidy in 1976 and used no CPU.
There seems to be schematics in the manual seen here:
https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_deta ... me_id=7541

This would be a cool game for MiSTer....

It will be hard to simulate the wheel. As far as i know it has endless turn. So even though if this game will be re-created, the control cannot be simulated at the same experience at it had.

The controls could be simulated with the joystick using the code I wrote for Sprint. It isn’t perfect but allows you to play the game. Not the same feeling as whipping the steering wheel around and letting it spin.

The Atari 2600 Driving controller (through a good USB adapter) would be nice for these games.

Wow. I never had one of those. We could plug it into the serial port possibly. Unless someone already has a USB adapter for it.

Otherwise an arcade spinner might be a good choice. We can add “mouse” support to these cores to get the spinner working.

JoGcon controller is also a good candidate for this.

I didn't say it's impossible. It just will be completely different game, as the wheel with its physical specifics is a major part of such game.

Retronic Design Adapter is supporting them.

Being able to play it at all is interesting.
Cores like the PDP-1 and Computer Space are interesting but there are some
other projects that allow you to mess with them.
Having some rare and non-MAME games on MiSTer would be neat.

The 2600-daptor II (or one of its variants) is also a good choice. I believe the Bliss Box should support this as well.

(But yes, even with smooth control from an endless encoder, you still miss the inertia of a large free-spinning wheel).

So someone has code running on a FPGA.
Those steering wheels are pretty simple too.

I remember playing this game when I was like 11 years old.

Sorgelig, games like Pong or Taito Speed Race CLV both TTLs without roms which used 360 wheel continuous spinning wheel - is there no way of getting it running using say a mouse X Axis? Playing experience for the rotary encoder games using a dpad / Joystick is pretty poor.

I fear many games with a steering wheel need one to play them well.
Look at the pics of the build that was posted and you can see the wheel used a simple optical encoder and could
be duplicated with 3d printing easily.
Steering wheel needs to be firmly mounted but the rest not so tricky.
