Falcon NVRAM / Dallas chip - where to find replacement?

Postby Chandler » Thu Jan 03, 2019 8:44 pm

Does anyone have any new / working Falcon NVRAM chips? or know where they are available from?

They used to be available from Maxim but that has changed now

Not 100% sure which one i need, any advice would help thanks :)

Mine has a DS12887A (which is not original as i can see someone has changed it at sometime)

They can be still easily found at various China global trade places, such as at Aliexpress. However, its much more wise to replace this with more recent chip combined with replaceable coin cell battery.

OK thanks

I see they are available too on ebay from China for a few £

Why is this not a good idea to buy these from there?

I guess ultimately it's hard to know how "new" the stock is

Simply because you have no idea what you'll get. A lot of ICs from China (ebay) are counterfeit, malfunctioning or used. Buy one from Mouser and save yourself a lot of potential hassle. I don't know where you're located, but at least to Europe Mouser has free FedEx priority shipping (you'll have the package in 2 days) if you order for ~50 EUR.

I got a couple from China, and used them in my Falcon since 2 years ago.
Not sure if they are counterfeit or malfunctioning but it keeps the settings and time.
Still working nicely.... so if they are used ones, probably have few years left only... only time will tell.
Or may be I lucked in. .... touch wood.

Yep, not everything is crap, it's a hit and miss, and the shipping to Europe takes a while. But sometimes you're lucky and you get what you paid for the first round.

For two dollars a piece you simply have nothing to lose: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2Pcs-DS ... 66860.html
Besides if you happen to have bad product, you can file a claim with Aliexpress and get full refund.
I have few myself, all working. If you want, I can get one from my inventory, but the shipping would be about 5 EUR. On the other hand, you would have it much faster. Just let me know.

Actually, its been a bit of a surprise to me to realize people still replace DS12887 with same old problematic part. I thought everyone has some suitable replacement installed already. Guess I was wrong.
Anyway, I have made few coin-cell backed up replacements and made them available for purchase here:
