Power off MiSTer

Postby Grocarlito » Wed Oct 24, 2018 11:35 am

Hi all,

I want to know there is a way to power off the MiSTer without unplugging the jack ?

A power off switch would be a cool feature...

I did not found any discussion on the subject suprisingly...

How do you guys manage to power it off ?

Thanks

I just plug it into a power strip with switches for each power plug

You should address this question to Terasic who made the main board.
I don't understand why you ask it here.

Plug it into power plug extender with switch. Or find some barrel-to-barrel cable with integrated switch.

Ok sorry, since nobody talks about this, I thought it would be usefull for everyone. I have asked Mouser where I bought the DE10Nano board if they sell this kind of extender.

I will reply here if I have more information on the subject.

Yes, thank you ! I did not know how to query this cable (my technical english is not very accurate !)

Actually, Amazon is also selling it !

For france : https://www.amazon.fr/Adafruit-ligne-Interrupteur-dalimentation-corps/dp/B00KLDPX8U/ref=sr_1_43?ie=UTF8&qid=1540415998&sr=8-43&keywords=Adafruit+jack.

Keeping power supply always powered - is not a good idea.

I totally agree to you, but it's not bad as in the good old times anymore to the low losses without load.
For sure it's right to eliminate even this due to global warming.
But: He has asked for a soultion - and it took me about 10 sec to type the sentence "barrel jack expander switch" into Google and get the right solution as the first hit

Is it safe for the SD card to just cut the power? I know that Raspberry Pi cards can get corrupted without a safe shutdown script.

Usually it's safe. Mostly all files are opened as read-only.
Some cores open files in read-write, but MiSTer minimize caches and open all rw files in sync mode.
It also depends if you connect by FTP and move files on SD card.

The safest way is to quickly press lshift+lctrl+lalt+ralt combo to load menu core - so all opened files will be closed. Then turn the power off.

Note: long press of lshift+lctrl+lalt+ralt combo equals to power cycle (off/on) as it does cold reset.
