GEM-Write, GEM-Graph, GEM-Paint

Postby tcat » Fri Feb 02, 2018 7:41 am

Hi,

Atari ST owner's manual makes reference to the above apps for GEM. They sound legacy programs such as ATARI ST Logo. I looked for them in the popular archives but was not able to find any trace of them.

Are there anywhere to be found?

Many thanks
Tomas

Hi,

Interesting read indeed, some dispute over property rights of the user interface used. I have also found these pages devoted to GEM. DRI developed the GEM orginally for CP/M under PC, while for ATARI they made M68K port, but somehow the GEM apps were never ported.
Perhaps, they could be ported now, should the sources be still available.

Of course that could be possible, but i've never seen sources of them. I think Caldera got only the sources of GEM itself, but not other third-party apps.

And even if the sources are available, that would still be some effort, and for what purpose? There is nothing that those apps can do, which is not already covered by some other apps.

AND back in 2010, someone was giving his away.

I'm not fully clear on the history, but DR had a port to the m68k running on the Lisa -- maybe it was done on behalf of JTS/Atari Corp, but it may have in fact have predated it?

In fact someone recently (like yesterday) got it running on a Lisa emulator: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... H4Rcp9vtBo

I've never seen the GEM Write etc. sources around anywhere, nor even DR's BASIC for GEM which was ported to the ST... but you'd think they would have been part of the IP dump that was GPL'd way back... maybe they were lost.

In an early issue of the German magazine ST Computer from 1986 there is a notice about this.

As the mentioned applications were unavailable at that point, Atari will provide 1STWord+ and Doodle as replacements, atleast for Germany.

Gem-Graph & GEM-Paint were definitely available for the Atari ST with TOS, I had ’em back then. A later version of these were part of GEM 2.0, which was ported by ABC in the Nederlands, to the Atari ST and sold as an add-on package. I’ve never seen that GEM 2.0 for ST in person, though.

Those programs were announced in 1985 but not released to my knowledge. I can't find any reviews for these programs, at least in German magazines. Write and Paint were supposed to be bundled with the ST. Atari did release 1st Word, Doodle and Easydraw though and various public domain paint programs copied GEM Paint/Mac Paint's GUI.

Interesting, I only know the versions released by ABC Software and these required GEM 2.0. All of the screenshots taken from these programs in UTD show the GEM 2.0 version. There is a demo version of GEM 2.0 on ST Vision disks 189 and 190: http://downloads.atari-home.de/Public_Domain/Serie_ST%20Vision/

ST Computer magazine never reviewed the applications before 1989 so atleast here in Germany they were not available.

The mentioned indicator also classifies 1stWord and Doodle as Public Domain but they corrected this 1 or 2 issues later and said, "Only buyers of the original 520ST package could get those applications as replacements for free, others had to pay."

Find Draw & Paint attached. I don't have Graph and I have no idea if that was released. It's very possible that draw & paint won't run on more modern Atari systems, as far as I remember it could be possible that it can run on a ST with TOS 2.06 and 68020, because I found it on my server in the backup of that machine. It could be like ST-Basic which also doesn't run on newer machines.
