Stuff you wish was ported to the ST...

Postby Dark Willow » Sun Dec 04, 2011 10:52 am

Inspired by the "worst games ever" - which games do you wish had been ported to the ST but never were?

Flashback (1992) - Had this on the Mega Drive and the Jaguar. One of the most beautifully made games I've ever seen, and just very well thought out. Another World (also by Delphine Software) made it to the ST, but not this? So wrong :(

Desert Strike (1992) - One of the few games I remember fondly from my brief foray into the Amiga world. It made it over to the Lynx but not to the ST?

Sim City 2000 (1995) - I do actually prefer the later versions of this (Sim City 4 is my favourite, and Tropico is probably the best in the genre IMHO) but in it's time it was awesome, and I was absolutely gutted when it didn't get brought over to the ST.

The Incredible Machine (1994) - First game I played when I first "defected" to the PC in '97 (it was already old, so was the IBM PS/2). Again one I played for ages... real fun!

This is going to be a very long message thread, full of "oh I wish" moments I think... :)

Anyways, for me personally, in no particular order, it would be:

Ultima 7 (they did 6, although not well, and I know 7 was a big step up, but still)

Ambermoon (heck, they did Amberstar)

Space Quest 4 (we got 1-2-3 so why stop?)

DungeonMaster II - The Legend of Skullkeep (I mean c'mon, if the Amigoid can get it so could we, and I'd love to see a Falcon version with the 256 color graphics!)

The Bards Tale 2 and 3

and so many more... :)

I tried Ultima 6 after that "Guess the Game" Ulitma 3 session.
Was totally unimpressed by the 16 colours graphics (but it did run on my Falc).
I had to d/l the PC version to properly play it.

Yep, stick with Ultimas 3,4, and 5 on the ST. AFAIK, the problem with Ultima
6 on the ST was the fact that instead of custom ST screens, they simply ported
over the ugly EGA screens from the PC version. I actually asked in various Atari
forums one time, about the possibility of using the 256 screens with the Falcon.
I even went so far as to grab the PC version and manually replace all the Atari
screens with the 256 color versions on my Falcon installed game. Of course, it
didn't work. :)

At least Ultima 6 was hard drive installable and you could save the game.

Whoa... good try man!
Wish that worked. It would have been great.
BTW, I finished the game (too a bit too long so I cheated... booo  )

Cannon Fodder 2 and Mortal Kombat - although judging by the SF2 abomination and the sheer number of disk swaps required on the Amiga version; Mortal Kombat may not have been a great idea!
Mega"SST" 12, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

Cannon Fodder 2 would have been great :) Never actually played Mortal Kombat, but thinking about it - it would have made a good Falcon (or TT!) game if it were made HD installable.

SF2 in the ST was a travesty, no kind of elegance in the coding at all. The Mega Drive version was one of the best versions IMHO, though you really need the 6 button controller to avoid some kind of hideous hand injury. It was long wait but well worth it for us MD owners back then :D

EDIT - And how could I have forgotten Worms?! Another game I should thank the Amiga for introducing me to...

King's Bounty

I'm a big fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic series and this was the official predecessor. :)
This game would have well been within the ST's scope, technically.

Yes, anything along those lines - like Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2, as well
as The Black Crypt. Well, the Black Crypt used that 64 color half-brite mode
on the Amiga I'm thinking. Still, good coders could have made it look at least
like DungeonMaster on the ST.

Sid Meier's Colonization, I love all the Microprose games and think it would be no problem for our Ataris.

How about Legends of Valour with the 256 colour graphics for the Falcon? I recall it was supposed to get precisely that, back in the day, apart from a rumoured falling-out between individuals at Atari and US Gold/SSI which aborted this from happening.

I would like to see several of the best Speccy titles on ST.

Knightlore, Batman, Max Headroom, Bobby Bearing, The Great Escape

And a final version of Donkey Island, a title that the author never finished. ;)

Hell yeah I agree with the Speccy conversions you mention, along with many of the other classics like Skool Daze and Trashman etc. FAR too many to mention here!

Flashback (a favorite on the Mega Drive, great game)

It came from the desert (was being made at some point according to magazines, I wonder if it was playable?)

Dungeon Master 2 (if the first one was first made for the ST then it deserved to have the sequel)

Pinball Fantasies (atleast an STE version)

I missed Jaguar XJ220. Especially frustrating seeing now how close to completion it was : http://www.guardiansofthepast.co.uk/sof ... ion_ID=413
Also that late Alien Breed clone by Frontier Software, "No Mercy" : http://www.atarimania.de/zoom_frame.php ... UM_IMAGE=3

And not talking about all Team 17 Amiga games. ;)
