As here we could read some contraversal infos about Predator on STE I made a look into that crappy game (yes, it is).
First I saw some Scottich Crew crack (Super GAU menu disk). It was really miserable made, and was totally unusable on newer TOS versions.
Then tried with couple other cracks, much better ones. Did removing of absolute path before filenames, with HxD editor, like this: Step 1: mark filenames itself, with terminating 0, then Copy (CTRL+C)
Step 2: mark at A:\ ... , same count of bytes (HxD will warn if not same)
Step 3: Paste (CTRL+V) Filelength is unchanged, and must remain so...
After it, I was able to run it on STE, even Falcon (with Hole), from hard disk.
But running from floppy failed on STE, under TOS 1.62 or 1.06 or 2.06 . Later examining showed that programmer used TOS system area at $1000 for some rutine.
It overwrites some pointers, which are used by floppy load, so it crashes after title pic.
Very interesting.... Is this the only case when game runs better from hard disk than floppy ?
Btw. it crashes with Floppy Image Runner too under TOS 1.62/1.06 or freezes on TOS 2.06 .
I have idea how to solve this RAM conflict, but game deserves not so much effort. If want to play it at all cost on STE buy some hard disk...
Note: I wanted to show here that sometimes hard disk adaptation can be made without any machine language knowledge, just with simple file editing.
