Access .prg-Files from SD-Card

Postby nada-san » Sun Dec 15, 2013 4:47 pm

Hello,
i have a fresh HXC and i wonder how to start a simple .prg-file from desktop. As I boot into the desktop i cannot see the content of the sd-card. In the HXC-Selector-Page i can see the .prg, but i cannot mount it as an image. So how to access an .prg?

Ok, no problem. Have managed to make a virtual Disk with Disk Browser. But as i started the proggie under TOS, it says "Disk may be defect". To make things clear, my purpose is to play snd-files via the snd-player. any chance to do that?

please help!

You need a HFE file created by the floppy emulator software.
Then using the selector buttons on the HxC you select this HFE file to be the content of the floppy.
On your ST you will see drive A with contents of the HFE file.
You should be able to copy to-from the drive A:.

You will need to make a Atari 720KB floppy. Any other format may results in the error message you mentioned.
Your ST will not read 1.44MB HFE file unless you have an Ajax install.

Thanks for your answer! I know the hfe-format, this is perfect with demos, games and sort of... but the converter does not create an hfe out of an prg, as far as i know. Ok, i will try to make a 720kb-disk out of the hole directory-structure. But what can i do, if i want to start snd-tunes from the player then? Do i have to produce a bunch of virtual disks? That would be real complicated. My wish is, to get a real big virtual file with all the ym-music in it (50mb)...

Sounds like an USD would have been a better choice then.

The HxC is a floppy replacement, so it works and behave like a floppy drive to your ST.
There is a monster sized floppy that you can make, but I have not tried on an ST. It works on the Falcon.
I think it is max 4Mb or something like that, it is in the doc.

Once you created the floppy (or monster size floppy) you can copy the snd-player and sounds on to it.

Yes, i have seen this option and tried a few times, but my ste says "disk defect" or sort of... I will try again. A little weird is the fact, that this failure also came when i choose 720 kb and put only a few files onto it!? But with an ultrasatan, i can manage such big directories? That would be great!

The USD is working like a HDD, so you can handle much more files than the HxC in one floppy.

As for the monster size floppy, I have not tried on the ST. I only have one HxC and it is fixed on my Falcon.
It may need the higher speed bit rate that a High Dense floppy. Check the documentation.

IIRC, there is also an HDD emulated in the HxC but accessing it is like the same speed of a floppy.
Imagine, having access to over 100MB of stuff using the speed of a floppy. IMHO it is not very usable but then you get to access huge amount of data storage without having to swap virtual floppies around which may be useful for you.
May be it was last year or the year before that when I tried it, I cannot remember. It was a beta state at that time.

Maybe i am to stupid or what, but i cannot access any sndh-file via the hxc-floppy-configurations. i managed to make a normal 720 kb disk with jam player on it. this runs from gem. but when i change disks via the hxc the player bombed away (three bombs) when i try to make a monster disk (4 mb) there seems to be no way to start the disk via the gem: disk not found. seems to be impossible to make a disk with sndh-files and a player on it which runs normally within tos. by the way, i use an ste with tos 1.62. but that should not be a problem at all, cause there is a special jam-player for dsp....

so i' am out of ideas! :(
i think the only way will be to use an ultrasatan to access the soundfiles. any ideas about that?

Not sure why the player bombed, because to the computer, the HxC just looks like a normal floppy disk A: drive.
May be you can make a ramdisk for player and see if it can read the A: drive when running from the ramdisk.

Finally i managed it. I loaded the main programm (jam-player gem) into the ramdisk and start the songfiles via the hxc floppy. :D
any other configuration with drive a and b does not function. so it seems that i have to make many floppies! even the other direction with the songs in the ramdisk and the player on floppy does bomb things out!!

Try the 2.5MB DSDD FAT12 format. This should work out the box with the Tos 1.62.

If you need more space you may try hxcmount:
http://hxcmount.atomas.com/

This will allows you to emulate a 32MB hard disk from the hxc.

Which HxC did you use on falcon ?

The SD HxC emulator with the blue LCD, something like this one http://lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=48
Not sure if exactly like this model as I got it like over 4-5 years ago, but it does look like it.
