Power Supply for SDCard HxC Floppy Emulator

Postby rocket-dog » Fri Aug 12, 2011 8:42 pm

Not being an engineer I am at a loss as to where to start to construct or probably more accurately adapt a PSU for the emulator. There appear to be lots of 5V / 500mA PSU's out there. And of course the floppy connector is easy to obtain. But how the two can be brought together I do not know. I suppose the simplest method would be to get the smallest PC PSU I can find and use the 5V / 500mA output. But that course of action just seems wrong. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Where are you installing it?
TT030: 4MB/16MB + Crazy Dots, Mega"SST" 12, STacy 2, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

When I had it in my Falcon, the power came from the standard ATX floppy pin power supply.
When I had it in my STFM, I just use the same power for the floppy drive it is replacing, it's a bit short so it does not reach floppy "opening" at the side.

I suppose it will sit in a box just to the right of the STe. I have never taken an STe apart so I am not sure if the ribbon cable will reach out through the floppy hole in the case. I did PM the designer from here but I think my question was dismissed as never heard from him. I didn't have any plans to mount it within the STe case.

To be honest I never thought of using the internal power. Mainly because the manual only talks about an external supply. I wonder if I could get a plug and socket and make an extension lead for the internal supply.........

On the Falcon, the floppy cable is longer but reaching out is a bit too far for it.
On the STFM, no way. it's like 2 inches only.

I do not have an STE so I do not really know. May be similar to my Falcon?

A major pain is that the floppy cable is soldered to the motherboard. :(

It's easy, just take 4 piece of wire to extend the power cable.
You just need to cut and attach those 4 wires to each line.

I thought that the ST version of the Host-Control Tool for the HxC means you don't need the LCD nor the buttons and you can fit the board inside the ST(e) where the floppy drive would sit? No data cable problems, no power problems, and it looks good.

On that Youtube video, look the video around 22 second and 34 seconds.
You see clearly the black connector between light grey and darker grey cable.
The light grey cable is from the ST. The darker grey is his extension.

So I need an extension for the floppy cable too? I did ask the device designer that too in a PM and he didn't reply to that either. I take it is a standard floppy ribbon cable?

What I am going to do is buy the cheapest smallest PC PSU I can find. Put it in a box. And put shrink around the cable.

I don't want to knacker this STe especially now as it was one I bought from Alison.

It does seems like it, you need an extension for the ST. As I said I do not own an STE but I can look up the motherboards on AF Wiki (if they have them).

You need to be careful of the flipping effect of connecting 2 flat cables together using the connectors. The top row may or may be comes out as the bottom row at the extended end. Take a multimeter to check it.

Yes I am the type of person who will reverse a plug if it can be done!

It ain't going to be very elegant is it? :(

why don't you want to fit it in the Atari in place of the drive ?

Actually I thought the LCD screen was a good idea.

I have been looking at other 5v 500mA units. It isn't so much getting a PSU with that rating more the plug. :(

If you really don't want to cut any wires, then how about this:

You need:
1. A piece of vero board
2. A strip of jumper pins
3. 2 short lengths of cable with floppy power connectors fitted (salvage from an old PC power supply or buy a splitter cable
4. 2 chassis mount DC power sockets
5. 2 DC power plugs (same size as the socket of course!)
6. A length of 2 core cable.

What to do:
1. Pop the top off the ST and find a suitable location to mount one of the DC sockets (ensuring it clears and shielding etc). Mark this location as best as possible.
2. Remove everything so that you just have the base of the machine (with the mark on it). Drill out the hole and make sure the DC socket mounts comfortably. Don't mount the socket 'permanently' yet.
3. Cut off 4 jumper pins from your strip of jumpers.
4. Cut off a small piece of vero board so that you have 4 tracks that are 3 holes long.
5. Solder the 4 jumpers onto one end of your vero board (remember the copper tracks should be on the underside).
6. Plug your floppy power connector into these pins - mark the 5v (red) line by colouring in one edge of the vero board with a red permanent marker.
7. Take one of your salvaged power connectors, strip the wires, twist the bare strands nice and tight so they feed through the vero board. Solder these in the middle set of 4 holes observing the red edge (Red,Black,Black,Yellow).
8. Take your 2 core dc power cable, cut a short run (to go from the vero board to the internal DC connector), strip one end and solder into the red and one of the black lines (make sure you can identify which line is red and which is black). Solder the other end into the DC socket:

Code: Select all

ST FDD
PWR.     VERO.     FDD PWR.    DC CONN
RED------1--------RED-----------PIN
BLK------2--------BLK---------Outer
BLK------3--------BLK
BLU------4--------YLW

9. Plug the ST's floppy power connector into the 4 pins on the vero board.
10. Make sure the tracks/solder joins on the bottom of the veto board can't be shorted by wrapping in insulating tape or using a sticky pad/Velcro pad.
11. Prepare the second floppy power connector by cutting off the yellow and one black wire. Solder the red line to the pin on the remaining DC socket and the black line onto the outer connector on the DC socket.
12. Finally use the remaining DC plugs and 2core wire to make the power lead from the ST to the HxC.

If you do not want DIY,look here.

Custom length standard 3.5" Floppy cable extension to reach anywhere inside your case. 4-pin Male Floppy to 4-pin Female Floppy. The base price is for an 12" cable and there are options to add 6" lengths up to 36" total extension. For any hardware using a standard 4-pin 3.5" Floppy power connector.

Here is a floppy cable extender.. Right at the bottom of the page.
Not sure if it will work for you.

Alternative is here, but I think it is still too short to be of any use.

Depends if you want to still use the internal drive or not? My solution splits the power so that you can run the internal fdd and provide an external 5v power source for the hxc.

To then provide the actual fdd signals and toggle between booting from internal or external, you should look at this thread

If it was my machine, I'd be doing the A/B mod, splitting a 5v line and boxing up the HXC into a Perspex case (similar to what I did with my USB version.
