Read/write to a SDCard HxC Floppy Emulator image

Postby wongck » Sat Oct 23, 2010 8:08 am

The SDCard HxC Floppy Emulator uses a HFE image file format.
This may be a proprietary format.
Does anyone know how to read/write the contents of this format on a Windoze PC?

I tried using a PC IMG file format, as there are proggies on Windoze that mounts these floppy images.
Unfortunately, the HxC reports it as an unsupported file...... huh?
Isn't it suppose to support this file format?

Huh ?
.ST files cannot be read by the HxC.
Must convert it....
Any way to mount image of HFE in Windows??

Try this: http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/SDCard_HxC_Floppy_Emulator_HFE_file_format.pdf
Warning: The hfe file format is subject to change and is only valid with this emulator. And using the Imd file format allows you to put your floppy image on a true floppy ;-)

Man... means that I need to do a program for myself ???
Well, at least it gives me an excuse to use VB.NET

No ofcourse not. You can make use of the HxCFloppyEmulator software v1.3.16.0 found here:
http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/index.html#download
The software does a lot of converting, both ways.

Yes, it only converts one format to another.

There is no simple way of using an image file "like" a floppy.
Meaning, on my Windows, I want to mount the image file into a virtual floppy.
And i can use it to write/delete files.... ie to exchange files, on the image on both Atari & Windows.

It's easy to get stuff from the PC to Atari.... just create a image using HxCFloppyEmulator software, injecting a folder full of the files to transfer.
But to get stuff from Atari to PC via HxC, I have not tried.... I normally use my SD card on the scsi device, not HxC.
It's may be simpler if I can copy file to the "image" floppy A: and then mount it on Windows.
But there no HFE mounters on Windows.

I guess I can convert the HFE back to IMG on Windows and mount that IMG as a virtual floppy.
But it's mean always converting here and there.

Ah, I see, you want to use the: "Non images" files:
The HxC Floppy Emulator software allows to create an virtual FAT12 (Atari ST/ MS DOS) floppy disk containing files present in a PC folder.

How that is done I don't know. I am using the HxC floppy emulator for hardware a bit more obscure as an Atari ST.

There are a new user manual explaining this:
http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emu ... Manual.pdf

Just create a folder on your pc named by example myfloppy.fatst. Put all your files in this folder and drag&drop it on the HxC software. your fat floppy is generated ;-)

Thanks for posting, Jeff !

What i have in mind is not so much as recreate a ST "floppy image".
This method allows me to transfer PC files to Atari.
But there is no way (or I am not aware of yet) to transfer files from Atari to PC via the HxC.

There is nothing that can read the ST "floppy image" on the PC.

Looks like a one-way street only.

Yes you are right, the software doesn't extract file from floppy image. I will add this soon.

But there are some others programs doing this.

For example Msa converter:

Great, I will keep an eye for your announcements. :D

I will also give MSA Converter a spin.

Thanks for this. Because of all my family troubles I still haven't installed this floppy simulator.

My plan was to strip menu disk images using JayMSA and then right the newly extracted files on to SD.

So it seems that I will need to start again with the plan. This may sound back to front. But I don't want to pull my STe apart and then find that the device doesn't work for me.

I am lost....... :(

Sorry to hear about your family trouble, how all is well now.

Actually conversion is a painless affair. This is because there is a bulk conversion capability.
Just fill up a folder with your .ST files and press convert, every things goes into your SD card ready for use.

Sorry to hear about your family troubles and although mine can be a source of strength at times, they can also be one of pain and misery or disappointment with the latter being my father, who has done zilch (and I mean NOTHING) to help me over my car crash; not even come to see me!

Anyway you are in good company as I have not had the time to even plug in my HxC SD since I bought it last year! Hopefully it works and I can then upgrade the firmware, of which there have been many (thanks Jeff). I wonder if I can just jump to the latest version without having to upgrade with every one in order of release etc?

Thanks all for the concern. Things are a bit calmer now.

Thanks for the manual link Jeff. So at a quick glance I can just convert a menu disk ST image straight to one that can be used with the emulator? I won't ask any stupid questions now, I will have a look at my stuff and the manual first.

No such thing as a stupid question.... only gives us a chance to answer like a kid
Seriously, I will try to help as much as possible.

yes, it is possible.
Mine was at v1.123 and because I did not RTFM readme.txt file, I had trouble flashing to v1.500.
So I did a flash to v1.100 to test if my SD card was up the creek. It flashed fine to v1.100.
After posting to AF, took a breather and noticed the readme.txt file, I went from v1.100 to v1.500 without any issues.

Today I spent a few hours trying to get my HxC SD to upgrade the boot loader, but as usual it was easy eventually. Anyway Jeff from the official forum helped me out. I initially thought I would need to have the latest boot loader to be able to flash the latest firmware, but in the end I was forced to skip the boot loader upgrade and put the latest firmware straight on the SD card. This worked fine and I then got everything else working as it should. The HxC now reports the firmware to be v1.6.0.0 and the image manager is 1.5a for the ST I think. My HxC is the Rev B red type and the LEDs are all red ones too, so no green or yellow ones on mine.
