Are you going to be doing a batch of the stand-alone HxC floppy drive emulators? I REALLY want a couple of them to replace floppy drives in Atari ST and Amiga computers.

I don't want to have to connect them to a PC via USB.

Thanks,
Neil

Yes this will be done soon

I'd be interested in one also (the SD card version, err standalone one).

For the SD version i thought it was OK, they are actually priced at £58 including shipping.

I've not bought one yet though, so maybe it is too expensive :)

Well, it is definately cheaper than competing devices that uses USB stick like those found on ebay. 8O
But I was just think the amount of replacement floppy drive that I could stash with that amount of money.

There's a cheaper one on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0402262422

Doesn't have as fancy an LCD screen.

(they also do a version that works with 1 floppy on a USB key, rather than 100 floppies)

Hey, that's an updated model from the same seller that I was talking about on this very same thread.
It's £20 more than the one that simulate 1 disk per USB.
But I know now that they only do 720K & 1.44MB, so those .ST files = no chance at all.

Well, if there's no more HxC and the floppy drive stash runs out... there's still this option left

Are you sure though? The eBay one (USD$235, WHOA) said that, but only to point out that you can't have 1 gigabyte floppy images just because the USB key is huge. Maybe it still has some flexibility in disk image geometry; enough to match the ST floppies?

That's the cheaper £36 device on ebay that quoted that it can only handle 720KB & 1.44MB.
The expensive one USD$235, no mention of it.
But I am NOT going to test that one out any time soon - I have better use for USD$235

I emailed the people who are selling the cheap one, asking about how it works.

They confirmed it's the same button press/lcd method as the HxC, but they did not go into specifics about how the floppy images must be stored on the USB stick.

I have sent another email :)

mikro wrote:To make things a little bit interesting, I and "some" other developer :) are seriously considering ST/Falcon counterpart to this: http://raster.infos.cz/atari/hw/sdrive/sdriveen.htm

The initial idea is to support all ST and Amiga formats, i.e. it should be usable on both machines. Prize as always -- lower than your knees ;-)

But it will take some (10 months at least) time, though.

Any news on the progress of your proposed solution Mikro? I was tempted by the other HxC model but the three button file selection method really did not appeal to me. I much prefer your idea of a software selection screen on the Atari itself. Also the HxC is too expensive for what it is, but I will pay extra for something that works well and gets a lot of use.

This goes for me too (as I stupidly cancelled my Ultrasatan for reasons too boring to go into.)

Also my much beloved original 520st has had a faulty drive for an age now. But I can't bring myself to swap the drive out just to put another floppy in its place.

That was my idea a long long time ago. With a default boot disk for each platform which could use the computer screen, keyboard and mouse to select disk image(s) into a queue and a single button masquerading as the disk eject button to cycle between images and press and hold (used like the Apple one-button mouse) to return to the default disk image.

Disk selection and queuing can be done with read/write patterns or perhaps to illegal disk locations.

Yes that is exactly what I was thinking of, mainly because it seems the most simple and logical approach.
