Konix Navigator & Atari Paddles quickie...

Postby seastalker » Wed Mar 15, 2017 9:58 am

[ok the topic title sounds naughty after looking at the navigator]

Anyone know why the Konix Navigator has two ports? A shorter grey wire and port spawn like an alien out of a perfectly working black cable and port and am uncertain of it's purpose. [See attached]

Fixing Atari paddles: Lots of dated youtube videos say to get part# co10464 Potentiometer. Best-Electronics has Super Paddle Pot CO10464-S5 for those that may want them. Anyone know alternatives say at Amazon?

I have a brand new Konix Navigator and it don't have 2 connectors like yours.
I guess someone modded your joystick to add a second port, but why ?

Hmm. That pic I found on an ebay but I have one just like it so I'm guessing Konix made a variant of it or, someone years and years ago made a small batch of mods for collectors maybe?

Ahh! Found it! On ebay, one sold with the box and insert. If you see the pictures, the insert says that the grey lead is for a Spectrum only and all other compatible systems use the black. Also of note is the instruction to not plug BOTH ports into a system or you will short it out!

Somehow, I am sure there were a bunch of people that plugged both in without reading that.

Exactly that. The grey lead was due to the later Spectrum's having a 9-pin Atari-type joystick port, however the wiring was different. The Navigator had the extra, short grey lead to change the joystick into a Spectrum-compatible one.

I've had both type of Navigator (it was my favourite joystick). Rather foolishly, I once cut off the grey extension, and the resulting shorting of the exposed wires made play hard on the Atari, as it would sometimes detect incorrect joystick movements.

Agreed, though it's unfortunately quite flimsy.

One of mine had a broken fire button (probably from pressing too hard) that I had to glue back together, and the auto fire switch kept falling off as two of the plastic clips underneath had broken off.

I also had to open it up several times due to a microswitch spring breaking.

I love the one I still have though. The earlier ones had a smoother finish to the top (where the blue arrows were printed on), and mine is almost worn shiny. The one I used to have with the Spectrum lead had had a noticeably different texture on the top.

Haven't tried it yet, but I am wondering about testing the ports on the MIST in the Speccy core. :)

The pics may have overshadowed the Atari paddles question but I am all ears if anyone knows.
