Emulating Atari 8bit

Postby Retrogamer_ST » Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:44 pm

If you use Atari800Win

Then do yourself a big faviour and switch to Altirra.
http://www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html

This emulator works like a dream and is everything that Atari800Win should be, not to say that Atari800Win is a bad emulator. I'm not easily impressed as an emulator veteran but this one is probably the best emulator i have run so far, no matter what system it emulates. A big credit to the one who wrote this masterpiece of emulator.

Now if other emulators were this good...

What you get

* What you get is a top notch user interface with plenty of handy features.
* Only the virtual hardware section in this emulator is no less then stunning.
* An emulator that works smother then anything i have tried so far.
* A good section of screen filters and pallettes
* An emulator that handles every single format
* Even the video recording works like a dream.
* To associate files and open/run them via shell works with .xex too
* No need to install vapi, Altirra runs them from scratch
* 15 virtual diskdrives and option to use harddrives too

What is the opinion of the Gemulator emulation quality for the Atari 8-bit computers? http://www.emulators.com/xformer.htm

Gemulator is quote old stuff and not to compare with the newer emulators. Even AtariWin800 hasn't a chance against an updated emulator like Altirra.

In the late 90's and beginning of 2000 there were some emulators that were real good for their time, then the author got tired and the emulators wasn't updated anymore. An emulator like Altirra for exemple use just about everything of new powerful hardware and Windows features unlike the older (not updated) emulators. To run Altirra you must have a pretty new computer with DirectX 9 to really use Altirra to it's full capacity. But then it work better then anything else.

Gemulator runs Atari, but not much more then that while Altirra is cycle precise and demands some computer power to run.

Haven't fully got it running yet.. looks 'promising' to a degree probably a more basic A8 emu ( no dual pokey and 1088k support  )

Thank you. :)

Right now i have one of those Atari 8bit periods again and running Altirra just about every day to get myself that (well needed) kick from the good old gaming days. ;)

It's strange, i'm still impressed of a computer that's 33 years old. :)

Agreed. Todays PC is a kind of "everything machine" that you use for just about anything these days. And most of it doesn't have much with computing to do. It's more the feeling of sitting in front of a multimedia machine then a computer.

Lucky for us todays powerful PC's can emulate most of the older hardware quite good, then the old computers and consoles will never die, just live on in a software form.

Atari 800 was released in 1979, 3 years before both C64 and ZX Specrum, yet so powerful. It was the first home computer containing hardware that supported both sprites and hardware scrolling for example. And while Atari 800 was a technical masterpiece for it's time, ST was more an cheap introduction to the 16 bit world.

And while the 8 bit era was very innovative the 16 bit era was mostly about doing the same things a bit better.

That's why i like the 8bit computers so much. ;)

It doesn't work with "Star Fleet I: The War Begins!". After Atari800win 2.5c that game will not run. Not sure why. That's why I keep 2.5c handy.

If it's being actively developed maybe the author could take a look at that?

As much as I really want to like this emulator it's just not doing it for me.

I have two favorite games. Star Fleet I and USAAF. The problem with Star Fleet I is noted above. USAAF's map becomes corrupted.

I hope these types of problems can be fixed.

Actually this is incorrect. I downloaded this game from ftp.pigwa.net and it works fine. So there is something wrong with my disks. Sorry about that.
