HDDRIVER : CT63 crash at boot

Postby pgreffet » Tue Oct 01, 2019 7:43 am

Hi all
I have formatted a fresh 16GB CF connected to IDE of CTPCI (IRQ patch done) using hddriver with TOS and Windows compatibility checked and nothing else. At the root of this drive there is absolu tely nothing but hddriver.sys.
At boot the CF is detected by BIOS and when the Falcon tries to boot it immediately crash with an error message displayed.
So any help appreciated !
Thanks

Hi,

in ct60conf.cpx/Boot, you have to set "New Boot IDE 1-4/SCSI 0-7" and select the IDE port in the lower right corner.

I don’t seem to have the option to select which IDE drive will be used at boot in ct60conf.cpx (see screenshot).
I also tried the CF on internal IDE of the Falcon and it boots without trouble.

Hi,

is your CT63 + CTPCI flashed with the latest ADE, SDR and CTPCI.jed files? Attached, also the latest ct60conf.cpx.
I remember in german Atari-Forum somebody reported problems if one harddisc is connected to Falcon IDE and another
one connected to CTPCI IDE at the same time. So perhaps try to use only one port at once.

Hope that helps,
Latz

Hi Latz
How do you check the version of the firmware of CT63/CTPCI?
I will give a try to the newest cpx you sent me !
Thanks
Pierre

Hi Pierre,

ABE, SDR and CTPCi version are displayed at boot, but not very accurate, right beside the Atari logo.
After a reboot (warm start), there are more info than at first start.

I think your CPX is an older version that is missing the selection of CTPCI & Falcon.
There is no trick, just use the latest.
May be you can find the latest version somewhere in the thread on CTPCI Networking as that one will make USB works as well.

Wow!!
Noticed that no one put up a photo of the CPX that has this IDE setting even as it was mentioned many many times in this forum.
So here it is - with the IDE setting circled in red (sorry about shaky hand.... getting old  ) :
ctpci_ide settings.jpg

and the CPX version where you can get this setting:
ctpci_ide_vers.jpg

I have not checked Latz upload here, I am sure he has the latest in there as well.

Hi all !
First of all many thanks for your help.
I also have to thank Rodolphe who told me the clock patch has nothing to do with ide problems.
My CT63 is now booting fine.
The problem taht the CT63 didn't like byte swapoping on boot disk so I deactivated it. I wanted to have a TOS/Windows boot disk because I wanted to swap it for file exchange. As my falcon doesn't like to CF on one ide internal or on CTPCI I have to use SCSI with big DOS to transfer files from PC to Falcon...

For file exchange - Falcon <--> Win10.
1. I used 3-way IDE cable, HDD is boot and CF adapter for file transfer - FAT32 is used so LFN is OK, no need byte-swap TOS/Window compatibility mode. I actually use micro SD card, CF-SD adapter and SD-microSD adapter in the mix. MicroSD is better as can use also in phone/camera.
2. I also use network when i am lazy to swap that CF

Long time ago when my PC have IDE (40pin) I use TOS/window compatibility for entire 2nd HDD... LOL  Those were the days.

Im interested by your psu atari Falcon.

it is a 110V PSU from US model Falcon.
I saw your post for 230V model.

My original for sale page was done nearly 9 years ago and have not been updated, I guess I should.
The age is now what you see on the page plus 9 years...LOL
The GBP is so much lower now compared to before Brexit... LOL but it is OK, still GBP 95.

Importantly, it is a 110V model, but you need 230V model, I am not sure if it will work on your Falcon.
You may need a 230-110V transformer for it.
I have no way of testing as I have "bend" my Falcon power pins to put my CTPCI.

The problem is that when I plug my CF as master on my IDE cable (3 way as yours) the second CF (slave) is not reckognized at boot by HDDriver.
I will try to format it using FAT32. I guess that you use MiNT for file transfer as TOS cannot read it ?

Make sure that the devices and partition are setup correctly. IIRC Bus 2.0 and 2.1 should be on for master and slave.
My boot is HDD and my CF is 2nd drive. These are not hotswap, so i need to power on/off, that's another reason why i just use network.
Yes, I use Mint all the time.

Hi,

add to WongCK´s post: In HDDRUTIL.APP/Devices and Partitions/, Bus 2.0 and 2.1 must be set active.
