CT60e crashing at startup (Solved)

Postby paul92706 » Tue Jul 23, 2019 3:00 am

Hi guys i just got my CT60e a few days ago. I plugged in the Processor and installed SDRAM and plugged it all in, right after the Atari display and CPU rev info And after the SDRAM 512mb message, the CPU crashes, i am asuming it is not reading TOS? Does the CT60e require to flash TOS in flashram?

Update : i ran the field diag util and there seems to be a problem at DSp port. This falcon had a problem with DSP port before. I am asuming this may be causing crash, i am pretty it is. I will swap falcon motherboards in the next few days and report here, until then i am open to taking your opinions. Thanks guys

Ok i performed several test with different Falcon motherboards and SDRAMs and different 68060 CPU’s all know to be working fine, and i am having same problem. I conclude this to be a Defective CT60e. Does anyone one have Willy’s email, so i can shoot him a email? Thanks much

Do you have a screen shot that you can post?

Were you able to boot 030-mode and set (cpu/mem speed) options using CT60conf.cpx? Have you tried other ATX power supplies?

Possible next step/text at boot might be: "TOS is copied to SDRAM", but to be sure you should check is TOS to memory copy option from CT60conf. I do not remember if 060-mode is needed for tweaking, other than cpu/mem speed options.

Falcon probably does not get far enough to boot, but did you try without hard drive? ...or boot without auto-folder stuff?

I have seen similar messages when:

  • always when reset button has been pressed. To boot again I have to turn machine off and wait second or two and then turn it on
  • try to execute app what is not compatible with 060. Might be related to machine reboot/reset. Such app might reboot the machine
  • 060 clock is set too high
  • (probably) when tried to load SuperVidel related things while SV was not fitted in
  • tried to use SV with CT60e clock (jumper at SV) CT60e clocked between 68 and 95 Mhz. Less or more Mhz worked. Without jumper SV works with any clock

...were these crashes access faults or other errors, I have no idea.

That is strange, looks like a software compatibility error, but you have not even booted yet....i would ReFlash the firmware

as after that it will ask if you want to boot into TOS, Magic or Linux

Hi jvaltane, i was able to boot 030 mode but i cannot set cpu/mem config options using CY60conf.cpx. I also have not tried different ATX psu, this seems like good idea to try different ATX Psu.

Possible next step/text at boot might be: "TOS is copied to SDRAM", but to be sure you should check is TOS to memory copy option from CT60conf. I do not remember if 060-mode is needed for tweaking, other than cpu/mem speed options.

Yes i try with no harddrive, like you said falcon does not get far enough, it seems to crash right afer “SDRAM 512MB” message.

I have seen similar messages when:

  • always when reset button has been pressed. To boot again I have to turn machine off and wait second or two and then turn it on
  • try to execute app what is not compatible with 060. Might be related to machine reboot/reset. Such app might reboot the machine

...were these crashes access faults or other errors, I have no idea.

Yes this seems to crash continually same spot right after SDRAM 512mb message, possibly it crash at memory test? What kind of memory does CT60e require? I use same 512MB memory from my old CT60, maybe this is problem?

I haven’t tried that seems like a good idea to try, now would i reflash the jedec files or the bin/hex files? Also i think i need a patched flasho060 program correct? I am new to ct60e i always used ct60.

To re flash the jedec files you will need a Xilinx programmer. If you do have one, I don't recommend leaping in an re flashing the CPLDs just yet, but you can use it to verify.

I must admit that I was a little skeptical when you first mentioned that your CT60e might be faulty, as I remember the nightmare I went through setting up my first CT60 which I got second-hand. My CT60e arrived yesterday and it was literally "plug and play" - it worked first time, so maybe yours does have a problem.

I'd try not to distract Willy too much (the reason I say this is because I *REALLY* want SuperVidel to happen!) - It might be better to arrange a return for replacement with RetroCloud, if the postage wait isn't too excruciating for your region. :)

Cheers,
Stuart

I've noticed watching the fan, when the CT is turned off by it's jumper, when you press reset, the fan spins for a second.
Being able to watch that usually guaranteed the next power up was successful.

There's a slow draing capacitor somewhere, makes me think the reason for having to wait at times.

Never looked at this one a stock Falcon, and don't recall the Afterburner doing anything like this, but it's an entirely different beast.

Memory requirements: http://powerphenix.com/ct60/english/sdram.htm

When I set up CT60e first time went trough 20 dimms from my stock and found two properly working.

A bit of a co-incident, I did the same today after I started to run in to some problems (random crashes, stuff refusing to run). My CT60e is now running at a very reliable 101.5Mhz and everything runs just fine.

I don't know what version is used on the new CT60e, but I'd be interested to know.

Subject/header at ebay was "NEW 512MB PC133 168 PIN NON ECC DIMM SD SDRAM DESKTOP MEMORY RAM". Seller does not have those anymore. I'll try to remember check manufacturer/model but I think it was no-name. First confirmed with PC + memtest that DIMM were OK.

Hi Paul I bought my CT60e from Willy in March 2017 and I think may have the same/similar problem to you. Please explain (for a noob) exactly how to how to 'reflash the Jdec files'. What software/cable do I need and where do I get the replacement Jdec files from?

Thanks.
