DRVIN (replaces Fpatch2)

Postby Estrayk » Sat Mar 03, 2018 4:39 pm

Hello all.

I don't remember exactly for what is used Fpatch2 in Falcon, but as I can remember, it is for patch something in 4.x BIOS for sound. right?

Today, testing my new ct60e I read here: http://powerphenix.com/CT60/english/Fitt_gen.htm
this:

DRVIN (replaces Fpatch2)

what is DRVIN? I looking for it and seems a program that coded anima for transfer files or something. What does this have to do with Fpatch?
I delete fptach and use this instead?

still is needed FPATCH2 or this (unknown for me) DRVIN for initialize properly the audio? the ct60 rom doesn't fix this? still it needs this patch?

thank you very much.

Hmm, the only DRVIN I know of is some patch to TOS serial port functions for ST series. I would imagine that in Falcon TOS it was already corrected by Atari. But maybe not, so its still needed. It can for example be found in HSMODA07.ZIP from:
https://sites.google.com/site/stessenti ... l-software
And I did not know of aniama DRIVIN. I do not use any of them on my CT63 setup thou.

Yeah, it's DRVIN from the HSMODEM package. However I wouldn't be 100% sure it replaces FPATCH2. From FPATCH2's documentation:
This little patch fixes two problems in the Falcon BIOS (TOS 4.00-4.04)

(1) Sound is not initialized properly.
(2) Bconmap() doesn't work.

To use it, copy FPATCH2.PRG to your AUTO folder.

This patch supersedes FPATCH1.PRG. The former worked by hooking into
the BIOS trap and intercepting Bconxxx calls. This patch fixes the
Bconmap problem directly (by setting the Bconmap table size to its
correct value) and hence requires no resident code. It also has
the benefit of allowing the Falcon LAN port to be accessed via
the BIOS.

While DRVIN's documentation states:
DRVIN consist of three import parts: making the RSVF-cookie, new Bconmap-
and MAPTAB-manager for BIOS and XBIOS, basic routines for installation of
simple Mag!X compatible devices drivers.

So to me it looks like it possibly fixes the Bconmap() problem in its own way but it surely doesn't fix the sound part of FPATCH2...

Oh, so DRVIN is doing more more than patching serial port function. I didn't remember it. I just remembered from old days that having a high spead modem, DRVIN was necessary to take advantage of the modems speed :)

Thanks mikro & jury. Maybe @Anima can enlighten us.
