New SuperVidel & some ideas for future development.

Postby willy » Thu Feb 01, 2018 9:11 pm

HI.

Finally i have a good idea how to put everything together. :)

Few Days ago i got a bunch of DB19 connectors, so now i can start the development.
IMG_20180131_104335.jpg

The main idea is to make a small box, attached to back of Falcon case, where the VGA connector is.

Please check the drawing:
preliminary_drawing.png

The blue lines indicates min size, the red max possible.
Inside the box will be integrated some control logic, Ethernet, DVI-I connector, somme switches/push buttons, and USB connector (for future use).
Everything will be attached to Falcon, using bolts of existing VGA connector. I hope there will be enough place for all the stuff.
Update:Power button. Ide LED.

Using already available holes, there will be a FFC cable put through VGA connector hole, and connected to Super Videl.

The goal is achieved :contract:
Fully upgraded Falcon060 in closed Case, without any additional holes

--------------------------

Some plans to the future:
At the beginning I was considering to redesign SV, but this will result in 2 different - not compatible at firmware level Super Videls.
After considering all possible advantages and disadvantages, decision was taken: Go the same way as CT60e, and keep compatibility at the firmware level.

SOooo...

At this point there is missing only one feature...

YES.

Mass storage

My idea is to develop a top most expansion board, mounted on top of SV or CT60(e), that will consist of SATA controller, with integrated 2.5" HD connector on top layer, and EHCI compatible USB2.0 Hi-Speed USB Host controller.
Additional option may be also DMA controller for them both
Update:At almost no cost, possible SDIO interface (high speed SD card interface)

Location of USB and Ethernet ports, is a subject to discussion, DVI - not

--------------------------

Last chapter.

The design specs is not closed.
If some of You have any good idea about the above PLEASE share.
I will consider any, even crazy idea :coffe:

If YOU will be interested with buying one of those, please check a checkbox in the pool on the TOP.
Thanks.

Great news and amazing stuff! Both for me please ;-)

...and also I might get a second CT60e, too  Got some spare Falcon here.

If there's enough space - maybe add a powerbutton for the CT on the external box?

But .. you're integrating Svethlana in the new Super Videl in any case .. that's separate from the SATA/USB board idea?

Anyway, I want a SuperVidel :) And Ethernet.

Does the red box cover the RF port, can the RF port still be used? (e.g. if the device took the full space of the blue and red boxes)

Would love Ethernet too, USB would be a bonus if possible. Will vote now ^^

Of course. I missed that somehow.

Yes. Svethlana will be integrated inside the "magic Box". There is some problem with that, but i think it will work.
Super Videl output will be DIGITAL only. The analog pins will be used for 030 VGA mode.

What? That means no dual-screen setup! That's a serious letdown for me. Seriously, if you can't connect two screens I would rather search for (and pay!) for a first generation SuperVidel. Why not make the box bigger and add a separate VGA out for the Videl? Yes, the box will be a little bit bigger but in total you will save space as users won't have to use a DVI splitter cable unless they use the dual-screen feature of the SV.

Or maybe offer a simple DVI-I cable instead of the external box for users who wants the dual-screen mode.

Also, instead of facing the DVI (and hopefully VGA!) connectors backwards they can point to the side, above the printer port. That would make it easier to locate the Falcon on a crowded desk, as you can put it much closer to the wall/monitor/whatever that's behind the Falcon.

Something like this that I made for my Falcon recently (mockup, ran out of VGA-connectors):

I'm in for both!

I also concur that dual screen setup is a feature well worth having.

Why not put USB-C or Thunderbolt to be future proof :D

FFC cable is cable like on ZX Spectrum keyboard? Is it "safe" for using video, ethernet, usb... signals all at once?

SD cards would be perfect for massstorage. Do not bother with SATA.

Regarding Falcon original video output: would be possible to attach e.g. Commodore 1084 analog monitor? I prefer to watch demos and play games on CRT 15KHz monitors.

I don't care about dual screen output and additional storage could be a PITA when it comes to software support (like CTPCI).

What I would like to see is a new device which would plug into expansion port on ct60 at one end and into Falcon ST-RAM slot. It would emulate ST-RAM in both 030 and 060 modes but there would be a fast path access in 060 mode to allow (near) TT-RAM write and read speeds. As a bonus it could have a separate DVI output which is less compatible and provide extended modes for people who want to pretend that Falcon really needs 1080p video modes.
That was my fantasy where there are no external boxes required :)

One additional note: I believe that SV software is still closed source and not so stable in many situations. There's no support for PAL modes as well which is a bit of a shame.

If the storage (IDE) registers will mask original registers, it will work from day 0.

I talked with Willy about such solution some time ago, but we was not convinced. Maybe, now he will change his mind :)

If I understand you correctly, you want SV to bypass V completly?

Or that it really needs a 100MHz 060...

I've had graphics cards in my Falcon since 1998. The lack of usable resolutions is the reason why my AB/Eclipse Falcon is still more used than my CT60 Falcon. The SV will hopefully fix that :)

Any idea of the timeframe for this amazing new SuperVidel, Willy? End of the summer? End of 2018? Well into 2019?

I'm sure you'll have tons of interest given the success of the CT60e :)
