CT60e and 68060 - do I need a cooling fan?

Postby oraclejedi » Mon Nov 27, 2017 4:46 am

Hey gang,

Getting the parts I need to install the CT60e in one of my Falcons, and reading up on CPU coolers.

Can't find a dedicated 68060 cooling fan or heatsink but did find a bunch of 486DX/2-66 heatsinks in Vetco in Bellevue, and was wondering if a heatsink would be enough, or do I need to glue on a fan instead/as well?

I tested at some point what effect fan have to cpu temperature. If I remember right it dropped temperature about 5-10°C. Fan was small and did no spin very fast. Case was open and cpu ran at default freq. So I think it is good idea to use some kind of fan. Higher (near 100Mhz) frequencies it might be more important, if not mandatory.

But how to connect it, I can not really say. I have flat round heatsink at my CT60e:s 060, so I have no experience with those. If there is anyway to use any kind of screws, I would use those.

Yes it could work with a simple heatsink, depending of the capacity of your heatsink, the version of your 68060 (the latest doesn't heat so much) and the frequency you want to drive your CT60e.
In other words, if you want to run above 60 MHz, a fan is more than recommended.
To attached it, you can use thermal adhesive pads ; that's the simplest way to go.
