Hd utility for MILAN

Postby Mark_G » Mon Jan 30, 2012 1:42 pm

Hello,

Recently I was trying to de-fragment my hard-disk with 'diamond edge' under magic. I always do it that way on my falcon.
(I works under magic 6.20 and mint on my falcon060)

At a certain moment the harddisk stalled. I needed to re-initiate the partition.
Needless to say that I was rather unhappy with it.

So, I want to know what I did wrong. And which harddisk tool is fit for the milan.

Do you have some suggestions ?

Mark

Doesn't MagiC have background disk transfers capability?
Wonder what will happen if you defrag and it decides to update some files at the same time.
I would not go an use a multitasking OS to defrag.

Hello,

@ Frank : Good idea , I ask it to UWE also.

@ wongck : I did it with my falcon's under magic and mint. So I hoped it would work on the milan also.

Seems like a nice feature.

I've had that problem on the Milan and the Falcon. I ended up using AHDI, or ICD (depending on partition size) (I think I also succeeded with an older version of HD Driver) to write over the HD Driver boot sector so I could then access the disk. Its a weird flaw, which happens more with the later HD Drivers I find, I did try 8 on the Milan and had problems so reverted back to the version on my Milan install floppy. I also use Diamond Edge, I'm not sure whether the two things are linked, but I've become uneasy with Diamond over the years, I'm not entirely sure it's reliable as I've had a few problems that its caused (not a good thing for a disk problem solving program). I also think it has probs with anything other that FAT 16 partitions.

I don't think background DMA works on the Milan, ASFAIK it doesn't have a DMA chip so it doesn't work the way it does on the ST/Falcon

If you have v8, then Uwe will supply v7.93 free of charge, just send him an email. Maybe 7.93 will work better on the milan?

Hi,
V8.42 works pretty good on Milan.
The V7.55 was provided by Milan System CD 1.25

HD-Driver 8.x works very well on the Milan. The problem here is not the Milan or HD-Driver, but most likely Diamond Edge. You might want to talk to Roger Burrows at Anodyne about it.

However, I don't understand why you'd want to use such a tool to defragment your harddrive. A much faster and safer solution is to copy all the files to another partition, wipe the partition you're defragmenting (easily done with HD-Driver) and copy the files back.

Won't help your data if something bad occurred, Kobold is THE tool for file copying (or "defraging").
