I agree, concentrate on that approach with builtin switches.

Multiple builds to install are a PITA for the user as I know from Hatari where it was necessary in the past to have seperate executables to run ST or Falcon modes with all features.

I can see how popular a switch is compared with different builds... didn't know that.
Guess you wouldn't like my other idea of separate builds for STF and STE then.
The problem with a build that handles all is that it gets fat.

Another advantage of one build with a switch: only one manual, one release blurb, etc.
Since we listen to the "customers", you may vote on what is "advanced".
For example, fast drive? (Guess not, but it reduces compatibility)
Some Fullscreen options?

The system is: if you uncheck Advanced Settings, some settings are set to default, some not.
For example, "drive speed" is unchanged, but you need to be in "expert" mode to change it.
There is a reset button to restore all advanced settings including, for example, drive speed (to slow).

Fullscreen uses the safe "fake fullscreen" mode:

With so few options, hard to blunder!

Display options far simplified!

Sound - by default we use the new MAME-like emulation.

Machine: Mega ST4, LaceScan, Extended monitors, Alt-RAM etc. need advanced.
Wake-up is random, you can select or "disable" in expert mode.

This will certainly change again.

Betas are available. The LE build was removed but an 'Advanced Settings' switch is available in the D3D builds.
