I read somewhere before that you deal with Notator issue (while playing midi-file it sounds very jerky).

Tried your last version - it's now better, started to play normally, but after 10-15 seconds, the sound start delay from the real bar.

Could you please check ?

Hi
Does it work in another version?
Is option 6301 true emu checked?

Version 3.5.4 - the same behavior with checked/not checked 6301 option,
version 3.6.0 - the same without option, with option system stuck, when I stop play MIDI file in Notator.

The improvement in Notator is claimed at version 3.5.1.
On this version:

http://ataristeven.t15.org/Steem_apps.htm#Notator

The song "Alexa's son" plays. There's a delay of 2-3 bars before it really starts.

I opened a thread for Notator in this forum.

I really need specifics (example projects?) to debug that better.

If you need to write a sector that already exists, you overwrite it ; if it's a new sector to save, you add an entry at the end of the linked list.
But there could be many other way to store this ; the format should also be able to store the result of a "write track" command.

I thought of something like this, we should open an apart thread for that one of these days.

I found that a public beta didn't bring all bug reports we could wish, with bugs appearing the day after release, which is very embarrassing for every programmer.
So now the beta is private again, if you want to be on the beta distribution list, please send an email to (some jerk stole my name):

Confirmed, I tried and it's bad, contrary to just playing it in Windows.
I'll look at it.
There's no option to set in Notator?

Edit
I could remove the overflow/stalling but now the instruments aren't correct (not assigned), does it do the same on a ST?

Hi there, this is my first posting. 8)

I discovered Steem only last week, and the only reason for my excitement was the perspective of being able to use my old Notator ST disks with it. I purchased a used USB floppy (a compatible one, thanks to this forum) and was indeed able to convert some of my old disks to ST format, to mount them in Steem and open the SON files in Notator! :D Only 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have thought this was possible.

So far, so good, but as mentioned in this thread, there are problems with Notator MIDI timing (Cubase works great, but I didn't use that back in the day). The strange thing is that some SONs play totally ok, while others stutter wildly, sped up to 200%, with the overflow bar going mad. Has anyone tried to find out if there are certain per-song settings that provoke this? So far I had no success. Some complex works play ok, while very simple projects go mad. In fact most of the SONs do.

Anyway, I would really welcome it if someday Notator worked smoothly in Steem SSE. I still got an ST which I just dug up from the basement, and even the original disk & dongle. Will check out if it still works once I received my ST to VGA cable. But still emulation would be very nice, since it would make copying old material to a modern DAW much easier.

In any case, thanks for the great work! :D

As mentioned just above your post I'm trying things out but Dima is very slow to respond, so if you want the issue solved the best is to apply for beta testing (see above too).

Unlucky I'm on the ship now and my real ST left home, so I couldn't confirm.

Can I download somewhere your current version with removed overflow and test?

STeem works quite well now. :)

Just one thing left to fix?

To make STeem work better in Windows 7 because none of options in the display tab works yet, like double size, normal size, scanlines, and so on. All the graphic options in the SSE tab works fine.

Perhaps you could use the same method to make the orginal graphics options work too? It would be nice to see a fix for this when you have the time.

To explain the problem. If you manage to change the size of STeem's window just a little bit by misstake the proportions will be all wrong and (especially dithered) areas of the screen will contain blank or filled lines. Then i'm forced to switch to high resolution and fiddle some time to get the window size exactly right and hope that i don't manage to change the size again by misstake.

Don't even mention trying to get a proper size of the "Normal size" mode. Then i'll have to count the pixels or something like that. ;) (i usually use the doble size mode)

I wonder what you're doing because it works for everybody else.

I see what you mean, I will try and add an option to disable window resizing. Note that to restore aspect ratio, all you need to do is switch display size normal/double.

Don't even mention trying to get a proper size of the "Normal size" mode. Then i'll have to count the pixels or something like that. ;) (i usually use the doble size mode)

Double is standard, maybe I will add "(small)" after "Normal size".

Hi
- There's also a running 'request' thread just in case.
- Legit request. I think I'll even list all available resolutions, why not?
- Does your video card feature 320x240, 32bit? Not all do.
- It would be done in Direct3D 9, so your computer needs that.
- Could you join the beta list so I get feedback about this?

And after a week...
Please don't post requests if you don't intend to follow up.
What's the point of this?

Finally I have more time for tests.

I checked with VC9 and investigated the source of song I posted.

Notator.jpg

Please see attached Notator project. FYI the bass line and strings line are duplicated (it was made in studio for more saturated sound).
Tracks from 7 to 13 are drums (just each one on the separate track), seems that track 8 is a bit out of rhythm, but I suppose it is not STeem issue.

Couple more words about VC9.

1. It refused to start under Windows XP (lack of library d3dx9_43.dll). After I steel this file from Firefox package and put to STeem folder, program run normally.

2. Another things - while trying to change TOS Image, always get a message:

TOS.jpg

Is this a feature or something is wrong ?

Hi Dima
- I think Notator is fixed but will still wait for bug reports. Important: check SSE option C1.
- There will be 2 builds of Steem 3.7, one with D3D9 (need last version 43), one without.
- Yes it's a feature, STF: TOS 1.04 max, STE TOS 1.06 min

Are those options explained somewhere in details ?

But I see that system is still working after that, so this window is as a warning only ?
