Coming soon! Steem SSE 3.5

Postby Steven Seagal » Mon Dec 24, 2012 9:33 am

Well, obviously there will be no 'Christmas release' of Steem, a little patience, still it seems an appropriate day to announce next release.
The main problem is to find web hosting that won't spam the site with silly popus and make it unusable, or just nuke it without a word of warning. Where are the times of geocities, tripod, angelfire, etc?

So there is this one, suffering from ads but it should stay online:
http://ataristeven.eu5.org/Steem_35_coming_soon1.htm

And this one, ad-free, but online since 2 days so I don't know how long it will stay:
http://ataristeven.t15.org/Steem_35_coming_soon1.htm
edit (13/01/2013): it's still there!

Anyway, the new features in Steem 3.5 will be:
- IPF support, all disks should load but writes provoke popups from CAPSimg.dll. In the current state, at least 2 games won't work: Leathal Xcess and Sundog, but hey the Pasti versions do work.
For the moment this doesn't seem to interest the Kryoflux guys, maybe IPF is more an Amiga thing.
- record video support (AVI), I'm afraid it's nothing great for the moment, but it's a start
- basic unrar support using unrar.dll, this can be handy.
- save NEO snapshot!
- better indication that Pasti is on
- Pasti red drive led correction
- etc.

I'm happy that it may be useful for others. I made it for a surprise! It's not 'NEO' for nothing.

With your technical prowess and incredible reverse engineering skills, would you ever consider porting or doing an android version of this brilliant work, as the emulator Stoid (Atari ST ) https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... toid&hl=en has broken infringements regarding sdk tools or was using hatari code, it was mentioned in another thread here, but are charging for it, when it should be free . I am aware your very busy with STeem, but you've done such a great job, I'd love to see it in portable form as I'm sure everyone else here at Atari forum, and if you needed any help graphical work for it, It would be my pleasure to help with it.
:cheers: for your work so far.

Hi thx for the compliments, obviously you've seen my reverse engeneering work on pasti.dll!
I haven't considered this port yet.
I will just point at some portability problems in general:
- Steem relies on assembly for performance (video)
- Steem needs a C++ compiler
- Steem interfaces with specific multimedia libraries in each port, not with one cross-platform library like SDL. This could be were some interesting work could be done before trying a new port.

If i'm not mistaken, android can use c++ code on their programs, as well as linking with libraries.

Fullscreen mode crashed on my laptop with v3.3, but works with the currently downloadable version. So I think this bug is already fixed!

I am using the 3.4.1 and the fullscreen is completely black! the emulator is working anyway, probably is not compatible with win-8 :?

thx

Okay, then the reason seems to be Win8... :-( I use Win7 and it works well here.

I can test Steem on XP, Vista, 7, but not 8 yet. Normally it should still work.
Likely problems are hardware/drivers. Steem wants 800x600 16bit, this is not a natural resolution for a wide screen.
Those stupid wide screens... The industry has become a joke, later they will complain of low sales.
I try to fix fullscreen issues mostly by guessing, AFAIK everybody's happy with the latest beta.
In the future there could be an alternative display method available in Steem. 'DirectDraw' has become legacy now.

Don't talk against my widescreen monitor :mrgreen: Actually, it works fine, and can set Steem well - in fullscreen mode too - with proper AR, just need to do some proper settings in video driver.

Hi Steven.

I saw in your last commit that you did not merge my bugfix (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23696)
Please merge it in Steem SSE. It is a very quick patch, and is very unlikely to break anything in demos or games, since it only occurs when extended resolution is activated (like 800x600x256 colors).

Thank you !

I hadn't seen it. There you go:

Code: Select all

#if defined(SSE_MEGAR_FIX_001)
    if ((ir&0xffff)==0x4e42){ //instruction is TRAP #2 (VDI or AES)
#else
    if ((ir&15)==2){ //VDI or AES
#endif

Notice that I left room for at least 998 more fixes. :)

Thank you !
This bug is really really nasty as it triggers only under special conditions, and the system crash (bombs) exactly as if it was a bug in the running program, but it is really a steam bug.
What the steem developper did was test the last four bits of the instruction code, then assume it is a TRAP #2.
Unfortunately, they forgot that this code path is also triggered by other instructions, like JSR !

So, to maintain the "marketing pressure" and interest in this new version, let me present more features...
The images are hotlinked from my free site (http://ataristeven.t15.org/Steem_35_coming_soon1.htm), can't resize.

Here, a simple thing, but very helpful, on request:

Image

It's in the window title.

Now there's an apart option for 'wake up state', for both STF & STE:

Image

This isn't real emulation yet, just some funny hacks.
For example, we have this famous pic with some spots in STE wake up state 1:

Image

It does very little else.

I finally found a CPU timing fault in Steem in instructions ADD.L and ADDA.L, there are certainly others.
With the fix, we now have STE demos Cernit Trandafir and Summer Delights by DHS displaying all the screens OK in Steem.

Certainly looking good!
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

The .neo snapshot feature is a marvellous idea, the images could then be re-used on ST directly.

I am using a virtual com port (eg. COM3) (http://www.hw-group.com/products/hw_vsp/index_en.html), I can connect to a (telnet) BBS via steem 3.2, but it seems there is a problem with the SSE Steem

EDIT: I can connect with SSE too! seems was a problem with the .ini file

I just wanted to add another voice of appreciation for working on improving what seems to be the favourite ST emulator of at least most Windows users. I look forward to seeing version 3.5 soon :)

Big thumbs up to Steven Seagal :)
