And the last fix/feature for v3.5:

WD1772

Image

Integrating IPF support in Steem has had some positive consequences: insights gained through reading the WD1772 disk drive controller doc and the CAPS source - not to mention Hatari - may be useful in Steem's native drive emulation as well. Steem 3.4 already loaded demos Overdrive by Phalanx (here the infamous boot screen on which Steem was stuck) and Blood by Holocaust only thanks to sordid hacks, of which I was actually proud but that just circled around emulation inaccuracies.

Now the Disk manager option Accurate Disk Access Times (ADAT for those in the known) is even more... accurate.

Image
This is a good taste screen by "Holocaust".

The ADAT option is here:

Notice the little snails, they were already there.

Also notice that those two demos, that are well worth checking, already were running in Pasti mode (fall back on it if the new feature doesn't work well).

Coming soon!

Steem SSE 3.5.0 has been released on 27/02/2013.

New features: IPF support, AVI support, CPU prefetch overhauled, FDC fixes (slow mode), RAR support, wake-up state option, and many fixes of other features.

Note: you'll have to download third party libraries to use some features (IPF, RAR), check the
info text included in the archive.

Since some of those changes are big, some testing and debugging could be in order. That's why the '0' at the end stands for. Yesterday, a beta, today a release. Good luck with it.

Other files:

Steem SSE 3.5.0 (Win32, BCC build) 27/02/2013
The Borland C++ 5.5 build.

Steem SSE 3.5.0 Debug (Win32, VC6 build) 27/02/2013
The Boiler. No guarantee of any sort.

Steem SSE 3.5.0 Debug (Win32, BCC build) 27/02/2013
Most development of Steem SSE is done using this version.

Here's where you can get it:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/steemsse/

The source is also saved there on sourceforge.

Or on the kick ass site:

Downloaded - will have a play in a bit.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Any reason for the 2 builds? Is one faster than the other?

Thanks guys.
Don''t forget to check the demo, it was half the development time!
I suppose that the main builds (VC6) are the best but you never know. It's confusing, but when I released Steem SSE 3.3 only as VC6 build, there was a broken feature that was OK in the BCC build.

The only downside (for me) is that I set up F12 to be reboot key (F11 being fast forward so I could speed up disassembly). But I can live with this :-)

I got a lot of questions/remarks about it, I talk about it in the text files.
For reboot I use ctrl-home.

Hello

Is this demo supposed to work in STF or STE mode, does it require a specific TOS ? It crashes under Hatari, and when running it under Steem 3.2, I only get a lower border scroller that is way to fast and impossible to read. I haven't check with 3.5 yet, is it supposed to work only with 3.5 ? Do you use any fancy stuffs that wasn't emulated in 3.2 ?

Yes I found an undocumented CPU quirk and protected the demo with it, only Steem SSE can emulate it.

Just kidding.
There's just a MMU issue that caused the strange behaviour with 1MB, I fixed it in v3.3.
When I checked it worked in Hatari though.

When I checked it worked in Hatari though.

It works in hatari 1.6.2 (I first tested it with a unfinished dev version that still has some bug).
But it doesn't work in Steem 3.2 with tos1.04fr and 2 MB RAM, which is strange, the screen itself is a rather classic slideshow with a bottom scroller (TEX neoshow is working under Steem 3.2, and as this looks similar, I expected the same)

Coming soon, a step version 3.5.1 with bugfixes and some nice additions:

- Scanlines + interpolated display mode, more like on a real monitor, it was a request but I like it much.
More options in a future v3.6, maybe.
Image

- Warp (STX)
Image

- Blood Money (IPF+STX)
Image

I think both games were much appreciated for their quality.

You know I do this for fun, so I had fun rewriting parts of ACIA (one of the chips -no, in fact two chips) emulation, and yes it's funny, but it's also buggy. After debugging this little step for Steem, great leap for emulation will be released.

Really useful work, Mr. Seagal
As we may see, there is still a lot of things to improve - to achieve 100% perfect emulation. Even by good old ST .
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

that display mode looks great.

What do you thing about adding a screen filters/masks in the same manner as in WinUAE? They use masks defined as PNG file. Below you can see some examples:
- Without any mask:
WinUAE_Mask1.png

- With a mask (orginal PNG mask file on the left side):
WinUAE_Mask2.png

WinUAE_Mask3.png

Hello
regarding Steem SSE 3.5.0, disk loading times are too slow when setting the "accurate mode" in the disk windows (this was not the case before).

For example, take the "Decade Demo" by Inner Circle. If you measure time between pressing "space" during the first boot intro and the start of the countdown on the next screen, you get :
- Steem with accurate : 12 sec
- Steem with Pasti : 7 sec
- Hatari : 5 sec
- My 520 STF : 5 sec

So, disk accesses in accurate mode are way too slow, more than twice what it should be.

Nicolas
