Ballerburg ported to Linux and other SDL systems

Postby simonsunnyboy » Sun Jul 03, 2011 6:34 am

The Atari ST classic Ballerburg has been ported to SDL. Works like a charm on my Linux box :o)

This is a really old game concept that I first remember playing on my ZX Spectrum and maybe even the BBC Micro at school. I cannot for the life of me recall the name of the game on the ZX Spectrum though.

I am quite fond of the ST variant Snowball Fight.

There was 'Gorrila' in DOS

I first encountered this similar concept game on an Apple ][ computer.
The latest game based on similar concept (but with many more variations) is called Angry bird.

I love Ballerburg. One of my all time favorite games, but not so popular in the UK or US!!

I used to play a similar game, "cannons" on the Mac Classic. But I could never find an english language version of Ballerburg.

I dont suppose anyone has ever done the english version. I always fancied that if I had time, I would go though it with a Hex editor and change it. But purely for my own selfish use!!

There is an english version of Ballerburg done by Eero Tamminen:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/tammat/hatari/devel.shtml

(just download the source packages, the binary is included there).

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been wanting this for years!!! I have been having to play the German version, and this is really great. I dont think Engish users know much about this game, but it really is great, and especially as Hi Res games are rare! Bravo! :D

This English version of BallerBurg is great!!!

Now I can play it, and it open up a whole new level of understanding, rather than just blasting away!

However, unfortunately the instructions under the 'Help' menu are still in German. And I would like to know more about building walls, taxes, etc etc.

Also, I find that the castles are sometimes too easy to beat in one shot, which I think spoils the game. I would like to learn how to configure it more, and I would also like to know if there are full instructions anywhere also in English?

I think it is time that the English speaking world, can also discover and enjoy this fine game!!

The new version of Ballerburg SDL now also includes a roughly translated version of the manual. You can read it online here:

By the way, the first version of Ballerburg (for the ST) has been released on April 29th 1987 ... so Ballerburg is getting 25 years next sunday :-) Time to celebrate!

So great to finally get this manual in English... Including all the bells and whistles etc.

What better way to celebrate 25 years, by playing Ballerburg on the 29th April!

I have made a note in my diary, lol. I don't know why I love it so much... I think that I have always like "Physics Games", and this one although simple, is very pleasing.

I wonder what other physics games there are on the Atari? Might make a good thread?

Heh, retro grammar too. Love that high-res ST font, it still looks clear and smooth today!
