So I don't have any setup photos yet, in fact I don't even have a desk to put it on permanently, but here's a photo of my new pride and joy, arrived Friday from Best Electronics, it looks as close to brand new as I could imagine short of pulling one out of a sealed box...

4MB upgrade with the made up 4160 badge, and running TOS 2.06.
Came with original manuals, a new STM-1 mouse etc etc.

Hopefully the first purchase of many over the coming years...

Wow! Did you invent a time machine and buy this in 1992? Gorgeous computer!

Thanks! It did feel like christmas 1990 when I first clapped eyes on my 520STE Turbo Pack, it's that clean!

It's in much better shape than I dared to hope for.
There's barely a mark or nick in the plastic on it anywhere, it seriously looks brand new.

Mr Koda at Best charges top dollar vs the EBay ads I see here in the US, but if this is the standard of product he's shipping (and incredibly well packed, as in *my* standard of packing and I'm a fussy g**) then I say pay the man what he wants.

I don't like running it on my old Samsung flat panel monitor (the only thing I have left with a VGA port on it!) via his cable even though it works pretty much flawlessly (miss the last couple of pixels on the right even when adjusted fully left) as it somehow feels "wrong". So next stop, SC1435 although he did say he has none left and I probably couldn't afford the shipping even if he did...

The ST range really was the best looking computer wasn't it. What a good looking machine.

I think they were, the Amiga felt flimsy. The ST was like a Hilux. I did like the Archimedes design, but I never got one of those.

I was given the choice of the STE or an Amiga 500 by my parents.
There were several reasons I chose the ST over the Amiga (despite it being arguably better for gaming, not that I would have admitted that 25 years ago) and I'd be lying if I said the looks weren't part of it.

Beautiful design.

(although the engineer who decided to put the mouse and joystick ports under the *front* of all places deserved to be dragged out of the lab and given the death of a thousand floppy disk door cuts)

The ST has a very unique design, I like it very much too. Even now, I think it doesn't look outdated as all.

Back in the days, I had an STF first, then an Amiga (which I bought second hand). I like them both. I still own the STF and I'm very happy with that. Yet, I'm using now an STE which I bought very cheap at the beginning of the year, it has also 4 Mb ram but it's in less good looking condition. It's easier to use than the STF for recording chip music because of the RCA output.

Other pieces are beginning to arrive for my retro setup, tracking down what I actually had back in the early 90's is tricky but not impossible it seems!

Managed to find a never used so brand new looking 1992 Panasonic KX-P2023 24pin dot matrix printer. Look how clean! :o

Even the ribbon was in the original bag with unopened manual etc

I'm really pleased with this purchase as I was shocked how much dot matrix printers go for (did you know they still make some of them today for several hundred dollars?!), refurb ones of these are in the $250-$350 range and still look tired.

I bagged this one locally (yay!) for a bargain(?!) $150. More than I expected to pay, but that was before I reset my expectations to the current reality.

I haven't plugged it in to the Atari yet, still waiting for my desks, but the self test with some tractor feed paper works perfectly.
I love the noise it makes!

OK, so lots of stuff is either in the mail or not quite ordered yet due to waiting on shipping quotes, but...

Nothing exciting to see really but this was today's progress on building up my retro Atari corner.

2x desks so I can have 2 machines running, and a spot in the corner for a printer.
2x "Atari ST - Power without the price!" mouse mats arrived from Zazzle
2x joystick/mouse extension cables for the STE to make things neater and reduce wear and tear on ports.
And some dust covers to keep things clean.

Still no monitor for the STE, fingers crossed I can get that sorted...

I'll post another update next weekend!

That's the danger with this stuff...
I'd love some sort of Silicon Graphics machine (Indigo2 or Crimson) and an UltraSparc station, maybe even a Next Cube.
The 90's was way more interesting for us hardware geeks as there were so many different processors and interesting architectures around. Now almost everything is an x86 with some of PCIe board. Meh...

Sadly I can't afford to buy all that stuff and even if I could I have nowhere to put it.
It was a real luxury to be able to basically block off the apartment hallway (now have to enter via the kitchen) to get these 2 desks in.
Anyway, there's plenty of Atari stuff to keep me busy for a long time...

That said, a Falcon with a 060 board and an STBook would be nice. Just for completeness you know? <cough>

My latest acquisition, all the way from the good old UK, a matching pair of boxed Cheetah Star Probe joysticks, my weapon of choice back in the early 90's!
