I think I am going to leave mine now too! If that yellowing returns again, mine was ever so slight, I may very well paint it, or Retrobright again but add some clear lacquer as others have mentioned. For now at least, I am as happy as Larry, or is that Happy as Exxos?

Lacquer ->matt varnish spray. Better retrobright+lacquer than paint the case except if you want to change its color (black?)

Edit: Matt not mate  luckily Exxos corrected me

Sorry for the poor image.. It seems the keys have probably been left to long as the text seems to have gone lighter. The grey case has gone terrible.

F10 key has actually gone even lighter as that had already a dose a few weeks ago. So the longer it is left "soaking" the lighter everything goes.

I am still waiting for my bottle of peroxide to arrive :( What I will do is try and soak the case on its own in a bath of the stuff to keep the stuff more even and see how that goes... assuming we get some more sun this year...

That's interesting, I wonder what makes 'Retrobrite' blotch in some instances. Is it?:

- The type of Hydrogen Peroxide
- The dilution
- The mixture
- The application
- The composition of the plastic over the years

As I have said I have never had a bad experience with Hydrogen Peroxide and Retrobrite, although I was super cautious and did everything slowly

I think it is because its "paste" so some dries out quicker than in other places. I am going to try liquid next :)

Liquid FINALLY arrived.. So I tried a really yellowed mouse...

zz.jpg

Conclusion ? Well even though it lightened it up a fraction, it pretty much did nothing  So either that stuff on ebay isn't as strong as they quote, or it simply doesn't work. Its been sat in direct sunlight for about 4 hours. With the paste on stuff, it was just about cooked in 2 hours.

The images don't really show up this test very well. I forgot to take a image of the side of the mouse, but its FAR from the proper colour still.

Didn't see the last replies to this thread. However, you applied straight liquid, fiendish! :P

This is the Retrobright recipe I stuck to, more or less:

- 500ml Hydrogen Peroxide (specifically APC Pure Food Grade 10-12% off UK eBay which gave perfect results for me)
- 2 level teaspoons of Xanthan Gum (specifically Doves Xantham Gum from Waitrose in UK)
- 1 level teaspoon of Glycerine (Boots was my friend in the UK)
- 1/4 teaspoonful of Oxy Powder (well arguably Vanish Oxy is the easiest to obtain in the UK, so that's what I used)

I added the Hydrogen Peroxide, Xantham Gum into a Food Blender and blasted it for about 1 minute.
I then added the Glycerine, blasted it for about 30 secs.
Once ready, added the Oxy Powder, blasted for about another 1 minute.
Once it was in a nice goop like paste, I painted the Retrobright mix on, and kept painting it on so not to dry out. It was a slow process, as this is the route I wanted to take, slow and gentle, so it took me a 1 to 1.5 days to complete each item I Retrobrighted, leaving the parts in the sun.

Did you notice some yellowing coming back after some time? did you use matt varnish?

That is what I used, but it pretty much did nothing at all. Maybe 5-10% brighter but nothing more. So not sure why that is. Maybe is has to be a paste which dries out. I had my mouse sunk in a small pot of the stuff for hours. So maybe that effected the results

That's quite odd, and you sat it in sunlight! If anything, with the non dilution you would have thought of a more immediate result as opposed to a paste. The purpose of Retrobright of course is to take the Hydrogen Peroxide solution and mix it into something that is essentially easier to apply, that's all, hence the Glycerine, Xanthan Gum thickening the Hydrogen Peroxide resulting in the paste. The Oxy serves to agitate the paste. Nevertheless the plot thickens with peoples differing results, as stated, my results have been suprisingly good, I would as go as far as saying near perfect, so I simply do not understand how the results can be so diverse!

It did indeed, after about 4 months. I thought it was my lighting in my room at first, but it did come back. I had some more things to do, so I 'Retrobrighted' a second time. So far it has not yellowed again, and I have now dustcovered everything which may make a difference. To safeguard, I plan to apply a matt varnish in the next few weeks as I am still refurbishing a few small peripheral items such as my Playback stereo cartridge.

Only thing I can think of is that some sellers are diluting it down. I actually have brought another bottle from elsewhere, but I think we have had it for sun this year now. Even so, I would have thought even a diluted mix would have worked over time, but it was outside pretty much all day.

So in the end, is it worth all the effort to put into ?

Yess they yellow back, that was to expect. 'They turned yellow the first time so whats keeping them from going back :)
There is some kind of reaction that will keep on going unless you can take away the stuff thats doing it or keep using the other
stuff to prefent it. Important: As long as the machine is clean its nicer to work with, yellow or not.

True I like a grey Atari much more but in the end as long as it works good I'm happy ;)

It's a good question, some people will think no, others yes I suppose, depending on your character. For me it is, it's not the perfect solution, but it certainly keeps the Atari clean looking, and that's what I want. In fact it has helped on some other music equipment too which unfortunately was once in a sun drenched room, a mistake in hindsight. It's just part of my character, I like everything to be in as good condition as possible, others will perfer 'character'.

I think Robson's idea is a great idea, colour matching spray paint, at least on the case of course.

the yellowing might come back after a while, but not that strong (as long as you don't wait 10 years) so I think it worths the effort.
