Reunited with an old friend

Postby wyerd » Thu Jun 06, 2013 4:42 pm

I first purchased my 1meg upgraded 520STe back in 1991, but ended up not having much time in the end to use due to one reason or the other, but I do remember playing MicroProse Formula One Grand Prix, much to the annoyance to the now ex-wife.

Fast-forward to now, and I'm going all retro by buying up all my past computers as the ones I had all went. I've now got a Zeddy, a Speccy, Memotech MTX500 and now my Atari 520STe which was delivered a couple of days ago after spotting it as a Buy It Now for £39.99 - just the right price I thought and it came in its original box as well. Here are some pics:-

It's actually got a Meg of memory, but I've ordered 4Meg and the DMA chip looks like the good one too, so the UltraSatan I've got my eye on will work OK - phew!
I'm looking at options to connecting it to my LCD TV which has VGA, SCART, Composite, Component & HDMI. Is the best option Monitor out to SCART? Is it also worth upgrading to TOS 2.06?

Cheers,
DKW.

You can get a SCART-to-Component adapter which may help if you're not getting a clear picture from the SCART port on your TV. TOS 2.06 is best for using GEM applications but not all games & demos can run on it. If you find a TOS switcher than that'll work...

Thanks for the replies.

I'll try the SCART cable and see how I get on and I'll look into a TOS switcher as well.

It was pretty clean when I received it, just gave the keys and louvers a good clean with moisten cotton buds. There was something dried up around the return and shift keys when I took the lid off, possibly a bit of spilt coke which I mopped up. By the looks of it, it must have spent most of its time in the box.

Sure the computer's nice and all, but what's truly impressive is how clean and lint-free your carpeting is.

It's a specialist, ST show case carpet, that came with the immaculate ST to show it off to full potential...
