Other program than Godpaint for Falcon Trucolour painting

Postby hylst » Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:28 pm

Hi
I need to make gfx in 320x240 16 bits truecolour video mode for a falcon 030 demo.

Is there any other program than godpaint that saves .god like file ?

Is there any other format that is not compressed in such a format to read it easily ?
rrrrrvvvvvvbbbbb for each pixel (bloc to move on screen, with a basic header).

Maybe another format that i can export to web or ...

As my Falcon is out of order now :(, i'll have to use Hatari. Or maybe another program on pc :S

Thanks 4 your help.

PS : What about blitter in such a mode ? Does blitter works only with planar video mode and not chunky, or is it only a way of coding it to adapt (that i think so...) ?

I seem to remember that Smurf 1.15/1.16 can convert pictures into different formats, Godpaint was one of those.

Can't you use the TruePaint GEM Loading modules with Escape Paint, I think I found Escape Paint the most capable and versatile of the Falcon painters.

Thanks CiH. Brillant. Do you know where i could find Smurf online ?
Or maybe another software saving .god file.

TGA uncompressed 16 bit format except header would be same as godpaint ? Extended green bit ignored ?

I'm not used to Escape paint, is this TruePaint GEM Loading modules included with Escape Paint ? No need for mint or ... ?
I'm now more used to grafx2.

Does *.trp truepaint and .god file are the same ? nearly ?
Any converter ?
What about *.apx format ? raw data ? header ?

Thanks 4 your experience one more time :)

Rainbow Multimedia II both load and saves .god format, and a lot of other formats. Then it's only a little hassle getting used to Rainbow's interface. :) But the tools are so good. Works fine in Hatari as well.

When I said 1.16, I meant 1.06, here's the link to the GPL'ed version, enjoy! :D

By tga format it should be possible, i'll test it.
Remember using rainbow 2 many many years ago... i was not fond of, "a little hassle" as you said, lol

You're more than welcome.

Just to stress, it's not a painting program, it does image processing of various kinds with lots of neat filters and conversion between different formats. You will need to pixel in something different and bring it across to Smurf.

The maker of it was Dodger, formerly of Therapy, a demo group which did a few things in the mid-nineties. He'd be pleased if you were using it to help in making a new Falcon demo. 8)

Hello CiH. I've launched it, many format are proposed. Many requires ùpdule not loaded. It seems it's a powerful utility you're right ! Dodger made a good job :)

What's strange is that 16b color option are unavailable. I'll read the instructions.

I warmly recommend Escape Paint or APEX. Both are great pixel painters unlike s.hit such as Rainbow :)

APEX Media was made by dml, and you can get the latest version from his site: http://www.leonik.net/dml/sec_apex.py

Escape Paint is available here: http://dhs.nu/files.php?t=pixelpainter

As for file formats, Escape Paint can save in a few easy to read formats (TRP as I remember), and APEX can save blocks in it's own APX format that is really easy to read as well (20 byte header, then raw data).

About blitter in 16-bit mode; yes of course it works. The blitter just copy/shift data around. But there is very limited uses for it however, the processor can do most stuff faster. There is also the downside that the prod will not work optimial on faster Falcons when you use the blitter.

Hi Evil ! Thanks for your answer :)

I didn't know Apex is now free. I'll try it for sure. Why not adding it on dhs.nu ?
I've converted / tested between now and my previous post many raw data 16 bits falcon picture file formats and headers, GOD TRP APX 16B ...
Thanks to you all, i've every think i wanted to work :)

Maybe you'll know one thing about NoBrain's MP2 player rout : does it require specific or recommended data rate and frequency of Mpeg layer 2 audi files to work fine on original Falcon 030 ?

The mp2 player will play at the closest available frequency. Legal frequencies for an mp2 file are 11025, 22050, 32000, 44100 and 48000 Hz. Needless to say none of the Falcon sample rates fit. If you play a 44100 Hz mp2 file it will play quite a lot too fast (49170 Hz) and if you play a 32000 Hz file it will be 32780 Hz on the Falcon, not a great difference but still bad.

The solution is to make a 49170 Hz wave-file, and encode it as if it was a 44100 (or 48000) file. The mp2 result will then play great on the Falcon but bad on a PC/Mac, but who cares, it's for the Falcon demo/game anyways. I recommend the "toolame" mp2 encoder. The max bit rate than an unaccelerated DSP can handle is 192 kbit/s with joint stereo. To encode a 44100 Hz wav file with toolame would be something like:

toolame -m j -b 192 file.wav file.mp2

Toolame will tell you that 49170 Hz is not a good value and use 44100 as default. -m j means joint stereo, replace with -m m for mono. -b 192 is the kbit/s bit rate, the higher, the better quality, but also larger file so adjust as it fits for your prod.

As for acquiring toolame I have an OS X binary if you need, for Windows you got to search for a compiled version.

Thanks again for your detailed and precise answer :)
192 kbits/s is excellent for quality at 49170 Hz, i've changed sampling frequency & converted my music in mp2 with audacity which use lame.
It's better with line command which allow more options, thanks for the tip :)

Now, as my falcon is presently out of order, i'll try first to test this format under hatari in falcon mode with high compatibility as said in hatari / mp2 player doc.
