ST to USB Mouse adapter from Ebay.. a scam?

Postby MCal27 » Fri May 10, 2013 3:35 pm

Hi Folks. First time poster. Been off the Atari scene for more than a few years since I sold my two Falcons, but I dug a couple of STE's I had in storage out and have been reading up again. I was looking around Ebay when I saw the ST USB Mouse adapter on the UK Ebay site. I was selling a few items anyway so I (it seems foolishly) bought one. It arrived today and doesn't seem to do anything.. certainly when tested with an old MS Intellimouse. The mouse light flicks on for a second when I boot the ST. I've seen a few folks mention that it's not a great solution.. Does anyone have these working?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

This is unlikely to be scam, the device probably does not support real HID mice. Is the one you tried a HID compliant or a PS/2 compatible device? I'd try first with a mouse that is also PS/2 conform via adapter.

Hi thanks for the reply. I'll check, but it's the classic white MS Intellimouse with Red illuminated area underneath. It came with a USB to PS2 adapter also which makes me think it's PS2 compatible. I'll see what Google says on the matter and report back. Thanks again.

Hi again. Still looking to verify if Intellimouse Optical is HID or PS2 standard. I did check the Ebay auction here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Atari-ST-USB- ... 0784673053? and it does mention MS Intellimouse.

I remember people talking about this adapter in the forums either here or at AtariAge - and they *do* work, but only with the right kind of mouse. mmm.. ok here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/163201 ... ge__st__50

It perfectly works here, so it's definately no scam.

Search for the PeST mouse interface which is currently being distributed by exxos via another maker, although exxos previously did this himself. I personally own three PeST, two of which were from exxos himself and they are of excellent quality. I use optical USB mice on mine via a simple USB -> PS/2 adapter.

ST to USB Mouse adapter from Ebay.. a scam?

Thanks guys. I saw Exxo's post about pest's being available again. I'm gonna try a couple of other usb mice I've dug up and if they don't work return this as the seller said I could. Really wanted to use an Intellimouse optical which sounds like it would work with a pest and the included PS2 adapter.

The one on ebay isn't a true USB, its just got a USB socket on a PS2 based program, that is why it will only work with microsoft mice as those are the only (probable) mice which have a true USB & PS2 protocol. A lot of USB mice have a emulated PS2 protocol which is anyones guess how compliant they actually are to the PS2 standards. PeST has a much better PS2 based program, A lot of people have used optical USB mice via USB->PS2 adapter. If it does not work, then its buy a better mouse ;)

@exxos: could it be possible to use a wireless mouse (+ USB->PS2 adaptator) with PeST?

Any mouse will work as long as its a true PS2 protocol, though there are so many chipsets out there, its impossible to know without actually trying it.

Ok, I'll probably order a PeST as soon as it's available to France.
I'll try it with the mouses we receive sometimes at work and post the result here.

By me wireless Logitec mouse (PS2) worked fine with PS2(USB) to ST adapter - not Pest, but I don't think that it is relevant.
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

A lot of PeST are available from Germany now. in case anyone is waiting for one still.

The "USB" interfaces were all a rip of the "free" open source code which has been floating around for years, I am not aware of any "true USB" ones. ones on ebay only work with Microsoft mice, simply due to microsoft do not emulate PS2 protocol.

Any USB mice will work with PeST (via USB > PS2 adapter) if they have a true PS2 protocol, only way to know is try it, if it does not work, buy a better brand mouse
