STOS & STOS Compiler .ZIP file required - must run off C

Postby Mug UK » Tue Sep 06, 2005 6:21 pm

Having a few problems getting STOS to run off an emulated h/drive under STEEM.

I've got the .ZIP file from Exxos' site and whereas I've fixed the BASIC to load (it was looking for the ACBS in the root of the C:\) - I cannot get the compiler to run at all. 2 bombs everytime.

Tried it on all combinations of TOS and memory .. same result everytime.

I've upgraded it (the compiler) to v2.07 Beta 2 and Beta 3 from Anthony Jacque's site - same result when using either of them.

Nothing in the AUTO folder which might be disturbing it ...

File listing is as follows:

Volume in drive C is Boot_drive
Volume Serial Number is C04B-7FA5

Do your bit and help me work out what's going wrong :(

Thanks to mOa for his help, but still same problem :(

With some help from exxos and mOa it's a little clearer.

I always thought that the compiler was runnable from a standalone .PRG file and not via the Help and F4 to launch it? Was I imagining things or was there really a compiled version of the compiler?

This is needed as part of a general fix all for PD games (and a few commercial ones) to help Atari Legend ensure all the STOS games are a) compiled and b) work on any TOS thanks to the work by ggn.

*Update*
Further emails between myself and exxos seem to show that compiling the compiler into a .PRG by compiling itself, is a possibility, but causes problems. Ah well, keep to Help and F4 for the time being :(

Just a thought (dunno if it's easy or not):

Would it be convenient to make a patch for the STOS interpreter as well? Compiled versions and interpreter should share the same startup code (in theory).

George
is 73 Falcon patched atari games enough ? ^^

Well apparently, this version of STOS (v2.08 it's known as) has been hacked, inc. the compiler, to run on any TOS. The compiler was disassembled and hacked and the TOS table size increased.

That's (apparently) what all the DEFxxx files are inside the compiler folder.

Have a look at the compiled Talisman I uploaded elsewhere, which was produced using this version of STOS/Compiler. See if that works on multiple TOS files - although the current compiled version as it stands has a few problems after picking the number of players and naming them.

BASIC208 as been patched to run on all TOS versions By Anthony HOSKIN, compier ACB has been patched to automatically patch all PRG with all TOS tables, also by Anthony HOSKIN.

Anthony Jacque's were terrible extentions and patches, (sorry), I worked with Hoskin's extensions for a lot of Beta testing on the Falcon. AH made things work the way they should and I of course registered this stuff so now everyone has it for free.

I have not however distributed the extensions, I haven't got around to asking AH if he is willing to put the stuff into the PD... I lost touch with him a while ago (he was having some medical problems at the time) , as such I am not going to distribute my registered extensions until I find out if I have permission to do so. I have however distributed the updated STOS and Compiler as AFAIK AH put these into the PD (though not 100% sure).

You could probably find some older version of AH's extensions in floppyshop if you look. Though you will not find any updated versions anywhere else, that STOS setup was the last one I got direct from AH before I lost touch with him. I also have much updated extensions then went into the PD.

I hope this clears things up.

Sure does .. too many Anthony's doing STOS fixes ;-)

Any ideas on the Error #029 that's occuring on Talisman, exxos? Works ok from a .BAS but errors when compiles.

Good idea, but has some severe fallbacks in that any compiled programs won't run on certain versions of TOS.

This setup is now working and happily, also allows newer versions of TOS to run the compiled programs.

Saves us (on Atari Legend) releasing PD games that won't work on certain versions of TOS. After all, people still use Atari's .. not everyone is PC or Mac-ified :)

Nice one Exxos .. kudos to you from myself and probably axelf6 too.

I can't download .ZIPs in work, so will look at this tonight. Is this the .BAS file or the compiled one?

All we got to do now is get it translated :)

This is the BAS file, it wouldn't let me upload the BAS file direct, maybe too big or smth for the forum...

I had a little play with it compiled and you get a strange little map up which moves about if you keep pressing keys so assume it works... will compile it and upload that latter aswell.

I always ZIP/RAR anything that I upload to the forum. Daft as it may seem, .PRG, .TOS, .PI1, .SPC etc. all our usual ST file formats (inc. .BAS) are not recognised formats.

OK, 2 years and 4 months after the initial post, I'll be making this go onto the Wiki and maybe turning this topic into a Sticky.

Exxos - are all the files still available on the STOS site?

It's only because someone PM'd me about this thread asking for help .. this therefore makes it a perfect Wiki subject :)
