Documentation for OSS Personal Pascal

Postby Dark Willow » Sat May 11, 2013 12:30 pm

I've been trying to dig up a manual for OSS Personal Pascal and can't find it online. Is there a version available out there, or does anyone have a printed manual they'd be willing to part with?

Actually I'm just getting started it. I haven't used any Pascal in about 15 years, when I used Turbo for DOS in college - briefly! I am thinking of using it instead of GFA as it seems easier to work with for creating GEM programs. I've dug up the package from Atarimania, but can't find a scan or text dump of the manual anywhere. Also I've dug up some old Pascal code which I'm hoping to update a bit, so I'd much rather stick with pascal rather than port it to GFA.

ok my friend ,you are very brave... good going ,,,
i been using gfa , pascal and some asm for quite some time , successfully ..but my first suggestion would be to stop personal pascal
and change to the newest pascal for atari called
pure pascal

personal pascal has some limitations.

pure pascal however has added incentive

it includes a pull down help menu
of:

aes
gem
tos
vdi

and its own pascal commands

all turbo pascal compatible!

gfa is fun ,easy and fast but pascal programs seem to be interesting and deserve distinction

ever thought about system heidelberg pure pascal?

i think it was memory allocation i had some trouble to begin with in personal pascal ,
, and also it was arrays of large sizes
they cause havoc too ,,,,,,
that was 8 years ago.....?

Thanks for the heads up. Pure sounds good. I'm mainly wanting to produce GEM utils, so anything that facilitiates that is most welcome :)

Is there a manual out there for Hiedelberg Pure? I dug up a download for the disks on emuparadise, but no manual. (I know it's German only, but can live with that)

Hi,

I have been following your discussion, I am also interested in using pure pascal as suggested.

I have donwloaded three disk images of pure pascal, but I have ATARI with 1MB of memory and a single floppy drive, no hard disk.

Is there a way to use it on a single drive system such as mine, I mean the most essential part, put just to one floppy?

Many thanks

Argh - I tried! But working with it that way is really hard in German. Can you recommend some very simple GEM program listings I can take a look at to see how they work? I do have an idea for a simple program I'd like to work on as well, just a simple GEM form for calculating weighted percentages for university grades, so that could make a good walk through - plus I could use that program!

I think I've got some versions of Pascal stuck somewhere.

Dark Willow, would you like me to see what I've got?

If you could that would be absolutely fantastic - particularly if you've got the manuals! If you do have them I'll scan them and get them in the archive as well, since we do seem desperately short of pascal docs.

believe me ,
if you can't understand the source and the flow within the help files
and the demo source ,

then there is a slim chance you can't understand university .

try tetris or wormie they're dead simple

my advice , if you have some time , spend some using and familarizing yourself to the pure pascal editor/compillier

its the newest pascal out there a.t.m.

as far as i know !

I'm off work this evening, after I get done doing the usual round of "winner" announcements, I'll try to go though
my software collection and see what I've got.

Dang 12.5 hour nightshifts, all weekend long, takes up way too much of my Atari time. :)

Argh, looks like I spoke a bit too soon...

I've got ICD's Personal Pascal, v2.05, not OSS.

Sorry! :(

Actually that's the same language. ICD bought out OSS, and just rebranded it  I did try emailing ICD to see if they had a manual, but the message bounced back. If you have the package I'd be very happy to take it off your hands if you don't feel up to scanning it

Well, sad to say, but so far I can't find a manual either. :(

I've got one place where I store all my printed Atari material, and I can't find
it there. It *might* be somewhere else but I doubt it - although I'll keep looking.

Because I can't find the box, manual, etc, I'm thinking this disk probably came
from some purchase off Ebay, as a "grab bag" collection. All the software that I
bought back in the day, I've got the manuals 'n stuff to.

I'm fairly sure this is the English version. If you like, I can MSA it, and post it
here.

Just lemme know and sorry I couldn't be of more help.

That'd be great. The version I've got off EmuParadise is old (v1.1), so it'd be good to have the newer version for the community as a whole as well as just me :) I'll keep up the search for some documentation as well. According to wiki, ICD sold about 10,000 copies of the package after they acquired OSS, and was one of their more popular languages, so I'm surprised there isn't more out there actually.

I'll try the other Email contacts on the ICD site to see if I can reach them as well.

Tested it briefly and it looks like it's working fine :)
The editor is a pretty big improvement over the v1.x version, and has some nice examples too.

Let me know when you're ready to convert LORD to the Atari ST.

PS LORD is "Legend Of The Red Dragon". At one time, I had one of the
original authors willing to convert it to the ST, *IF* he could have gotten
his hands on a complete system to do it. <shrugs> Another missed golden
opportunity in the ST's history I guess. See link for more info:
